Black phosphorus thin films for SWIR photodetectors

Overview In recent years, short-wave infrared (SWIR) technologies have gained traction in various fields, including healthcare, agriculture, security, automotive, machine vision, and VR. Among the leading technologies for SWIR detection are quantum-dot thin films, but these often contain heavy metals and face mobility and ligand-related limitations. This project proposes the use of black phosphorus (bP) as the active layer for a new generation of SWIR photodetectors, leveraging its tunable bandgap with layer thickness and high mobility for faster device performance. The goal of the internship/master’s thesis project is to explore and develop black phosphorus–based thin absorbers for SWIR wavelengths and integrate them into photodetectors. Layered bP thin films will be produced via an ink process, with thickness determined by the material’s optical properties. After a short training period, the selected candidate will work independently in a lab environment to fabricate and characterize devices, with feedback used to optimize performance. The candidate will gain experience in a wide range of optical, structural, and electrical measurements. An international team of experienced researchers will provide continuous support and guidance. The ideal candidate is hands-on in a lab, with a proven record of problem-solving and data analysis. Given imec’s international character, excellent knowledge of English is a prerequisite.
