Freelance IT Cybersecurity Project Manager – Aerospace Industry

Project Overview

A leading aerospace organisation is strengthening its cybersecurity posture by enhancing its vulnerability management and Identity & Access Management (IAM) frameworks. This initiative focuses on proactively identifying and mitigating security risks across critical IT and OT (Operational Technology) systems, ensuring compliance with industry regulations and protecting sensitive data.

The Freelance IT Cybersecurity Project Manager will be responsible for coordinating cybersecurity efforts, overseeing vulnerability assessments, and driving IAM improvements. The role involves working closely with security teams, infrastructure specialists, and external auditors to ensure robust security controls and continuous risk mitigation.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Project Leadership: Manage end-to-end cybersecurity initiatives related to vulnerability testing and IAM, ensuring deliverables are met within scope, time, and budget.
  • Vulnerability Management: Oversee regular penetration testing, vulnerability scans, and threat assessments across IT and OT environments. Work with security engineers to prioritise remediation efforts.
  • IAM Implementation: Coordinate the rollout of IAM policies, privileged access management (PAM), and role-based access controls (RBAC) to strengthen identity security.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Work closely with CISOs, security teams, infrastructure teams, and regulatory bodies to align cybersecurity practices with industry standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure adherence to NIST, ISO 27001, DO-326A, and aerospace-specific security frameworks. Facilitate audits and compliance reviews.
  • Incident Response & Risk Mitigation: Assist in defining incident response strategies, ensuring swift containment and resolution of security breaches.
  • Technical Documentation & Reporting: Develop risk reports, compliance documentation, and security roadmaps, providing clear updates to leadership.
  • Third-Party Risk Management: Assess and manage cybersecurity risks associated with suppliers, contractors, and external service providers.

Experience & Background

  • 5+ years of experience in IT Project Management, with a strong focus on cybersecurity, vulnerability management, and IAM.
  • Proven experience managing cybersecurity initiatives in highly regulated industries, preferably aerospace, defence, or critical infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of security risk management, penetration testing methodologies, and IAM frameworks.

Technology & Tools

  • Experience with vulnerability scanning tools.
  • Familiarity with IAM solutions).
  • Knowledge of SIEM platforms and Endpoint Detection & Response tools is a bonus.
  • Understanding of Zero Trust architectures and modern access control methodologies.

Bonuses

  • Certifications: CISSP, CISM, CEH, OSCP, or ISO 27001 Lead Auditor.
  • Experience in Operational Technology (OT) security for aerospace or industrial environments.
