If you want to work on impactful projects that support national security, international missions, and emergency response, this role offers a meaningful challenge. Your Work Environment You’ll join the Data Exploitation team within the Information Technology & Services (IT&S) department — a multidisciplinary group of civilian and military IT specialists. Your main workplace will be the Competence Centre for Airborne Equipment and Communication & Information Systems (CC V&C) in Peutie. CC V&C manages and supports Defence’s communication networks and business applications, covering both in‑house and COTS solutions throughout their full lifecycle. With 27,000 employees, Belgian Defence is one of the country’s largest and most unique employers, with its own culture, mission, and structure. Your Role as Data Engineer You’ll play a key role in designing, developing, and maintaining Defence’s data infrastructure. Data Extraction & Transformation Develop ETL flows using Talend Build scalable, robust data pipelines Coach and support new team members Ensure data quality, integrity, and security compliance Monitor and optimize ETL performance Data Integration Collaborate with internal stakeholders to understand data needs Integrate diverse data sources into unified datasets Design scalable solutions for growing data volumes Your Profile You hold a master’s degree (or higher) in an IT‑related field and possess the BEL or EU nationality. Further relevant skills are: Team‑oriented mindset and willingness to share knowledge Critical thinking and continuous improvement Strong analytical and abstract reasoning skills Transparent, constructive communication with internal and external clients Ability to work independently and collaboratively Ability to explain complex topics to non‑technical audiences Preferably bilingual (Dutch, French), with sufficient command of either French or Dutch to participate seamlessly in meetings with specialists and end users. Solid command of technical English.
