You hold a Master's degree in Architecture or an equivalent qualification.You possess an 'exemplary' architecture practice: you can demonstrate authentic and relevant practical and/or research experience in the broad field of architecture.You have a capacity for reflection on fundamental and/or current architectural issues.You are willing to work in a team environment.You have an interest in designing educational environments and pedagogical experiments.You can work independently.You are proficient in Dutch and/or English.Ideally, you will be appointed to a teaching assignment at a specific campus (Brussels or Ghent), but it is advantageous if you are willing to work at both campuses.This is a junior position. Given the appointment with a maximum duration of 6 years, preference will be given to candidates with little or no seniority in Flemish higher education.You wil guide design assignments in a studio for master's students of architecture. The educational environment of the Master of Architecture program includes three distinct thematic strands or so-called 'engagements'. An engagement is an orientations within the master's program where the student consciously chooses to delve into a sub-area of the broad field of architecture over three semesters, exploring it through design. It represents a commitment to the profession. This engagement is supported by a thematic platform that brings together a community of teachers, researchers and students in a collective pedagogical project. This project is structured around a central thematic line aimed at developing specific attitude. Each engagement ultimately leads to the same degree (Master of Architecture) and therefore must approach architecture as a whole, but it places a clear emphasis on a particular aspect: Craftmanship: designing architecture from a critical perspective on 'building' (both as noun and a verb), engaging with "the act of making"Urban cultures: designing architecture from a critical perspective on 'context' (both physical and cultural), engaging with "a wide variety of urban contexts"Mediating tactics: Designing architecture from a critical perspective on 'the discipline of architecture' (its limits and foundations), engaging with "alternative forms of architectural practice"During the interview, we will discuss which engagement(s) best align with your profile as a designer. Therefore, it is advisable to reflect in advance on this and present your practice based on those preferences and affinities. When filtering, choose the engagement whose studios you wish to view from the top left of the screen.)Note: It is possible that, due to the relevance of your profile and/or organizational needs, you may be involved in not just one but two engagements (for example, one 15% studio in 'Craftsmanship' and another 15% studio in 'Urban Cultures').Your main task will be guiding two design studios (one day per week for two semesters or two days per week for one semester). Design guidance includes organizing and conducting supporting seminars and evaluations of student designs. The assignment will be supervised by the engagement coordinator.You will function within a team and collaborate on developing a specific teaching assignment in consultation with the engagement coordinator and other teachers within the engagement where your studio is located.
Your appointment percentage includes ample time alongside contact hours with students for lesson preparations and other administrative and support tasks:You will participate in the 'supersalon' workshop during week 14 of Semester 1, attend two engagement meetings, and at least one faculty council meeting per year.Administrative duties include filling out grade sheets and feedback documents.You will also participate in one or more supporting tasks such as meetings for assignment preparation and evaluation, overarching learning events like the Small and Tall events, organizing trips or excursions, representing the faculty at fairs, exhibitions, and information days.The Faculty of Architecture brings together the academic architecture programs (interior architecture, architecture, Architecture, urbanism & spatial planning, educational master in design sciences) from the Sint-Lucas campuses in Brussels and Ghent. The faculty is driven by a carefully curated diversity of practices and is renowned for its forward-looking education that cultivates freedom of exploration and experimentation. Currently, there are approximately 2,200 students, including 350 international students.We offer a part-time position of 30% for 2 years as a Practice Assistant (academic staff, salary scale 43), starting from September 15, 2024. Depending on the assignment, some meetings may take place before the start date to prepare for the upcoming semester.Upon positive evaluation, the appointment can be extended for up to 4 additional years (thus up to a total of 6 years).
