The European Climate Foundation (ECF) is a major philanthropic initiative working to help tackle the climate crisis by fostering the transition to a net-zero emission society at the national, European and global level.
We support around 700 partner organisations to carry out activities that drive urgent and ambitious policy in support of the objectives of the Paris Agreement, contribute to the public debate on climate action and help deliver a socially responsible transition to a net-zero economy and sustainable society in Europe and around the world.

About the role
European countries have significantly accelerated domestic climate action over the past five years thanks to the European Green Deal. With the current Parliament's term ending, 2024 is a transition year. A new leadership will take the rein by year-end in a rapidly evolving domestic and geopolitical context.
There is no time for complacency as the next years will be critical to aligning climate, industrial and agriculture policies, preparing the EU27 for a wave of enlargement, and turning the European Green Deal into a business success story.
The Director - EU Institutions will build on the substantial resources, networks and partnerships the ECF has created in Brussels and capitals, as well as with colleagues across other member states and in ECF international programmes to develop a European strategy and activities to enhance political support for European climate action in Brussels and capitals.
The ECF is looking for a talented, dynamic, experienced and strategic individual to help shape the program's next phase of its development to best respond to the evolving political context.
Key responsibilities
The Director - EU Institutions will lead the program into the next phase of its development to best respond to the changing political context
Responsibilities include:
- Working with the Executive Director to develop a strategic framework for ECF's engagement with European issues and lead the implementation of the relevant workstreams;
- Working closely with the ECF international, country and sectorial programmes teams to develop joint approaches, including developing and managing EUwide projects where appropriate and the EU's role in the world;
- Design and implement a renewed program strategy together with the team and the Executive Director;
- Curate a network of external stakeholders and opinion leaders in and around the European institutions to inform political strategies;
- Maintaining relationships with grantees and other partners in Brussels and, where appropriate, in other countries to support strong collaboration and a creative shared approach to problemsolving;
- Engaging closely with ECF's funders (incl. fundraising) and other members of the philanthropic community across Europe and elsewhere; Represent ECF externally at stakeholder meetings and events, convene stakeholders and design new activities to ensure shared priorities and strategy.
Requirements:
Experience and competencies
- University degree or equivalent;
- At least ten years of relevant professional experience in relation to European issues in Brussels and in memberstates;
- A deep understanding of the EU political context and advocacy strategies;
- Proven management and leadership skills, including leading public affairs or advocacy campaigns and being a successful and caring team leader;
- Collaborativeminded, with experience in large organisations;
- Strong networking skills to rally a diverse group of partners, including in different cultural contexts, around a common strategy;
- Excellent written and verbal communication in English, with the ability to crystallise complex issues into practical and readable strategy documents. The ability to speak other European languages is welcome; A genuine interest in the mission and values of the ECF.
