Cognitive tools - a comparative study:
In today's world in data & analytics, we see more and more opportunities around quality control using vision techniques.

You can get started with vision problems using multiple tools and technologies (eg Azure Cognitive Services, Code Generators, start from scratch).

There are different types of vision solutions ranging from basic code that can be tweaked to almost end-to-end auto-generated solutions (like Cognitive Services).

We want to evaluate the different solutions in the market and list their pro's and con's

Reducing food waste with demand forecasting & simulation:

In a world where fresh food is always available, reducing food waste means we need to smartly predict the quantities we would need based on trends, seasonality, promotions, external events, weather, etc.

As element61 we have been working on this demand forecasting challenge for many years.

In this traineeship you will continue leading the way on further optimizing & improving our demand forecasting & simulation set-up.


Running Databricks Overwatch in practice - A tool to spot performance gains and cost savings in Spark:

As a Data Scientist & Data Engineer you want to leverage scalable computing: you want to leverage a compute cluster to run your increasing workloads faster & smoother.

For this, we use Spark and often Databricks, our managed Spark platform.

However, running a compute cluster can rapidly become complex and expensive:

you need to size your cluster correctly, tune your data in line with your cluster & spot performance gain opportunities.

With Databricks Overwatch we get the opportunity to monitor & spot performance gains & cost savings in Spark and proactively guide Data Scientists and Data Engineers in right sizing their jobs on the right cluster.


Monitoring Data Quality in a Lakehouse with Great Expectations:

As a Data Analyst or Data Scientist you trust that the data you have access to is correct, complete and of high quality.

You want clean data for your analyses, reports & Machine Learning experiments. However many organizations struggle with Data Quality incl. missing data, missing values, changing column names, wrong master data, etc.

Great Expectations is a Python package to monitor data quality & set expectations smartly, allowing validating data as it enters through the Data & AI platform.

Imagine having access to direct data quality statistics and/or alerts when data quality expectations aren't met.

Using Tempo to smartly optimize Time Series IoT data for Analytics & AI:
Time series is data coming from IoT sensors, smart meters, or digital events.

It is raw data generated - continuously every couple of minutes or seconds - in a production plant, a connected factory but also a digital app or website.

However, time series data is often messy and not easy to translate into usable features for predictive models.
With Tempo, Databricks (Labs) is introducing a smart way to build transformations on top of times series data.

It offers an opportunity for us to leverage this framework into smarter and better of time series features for ML predictive models such as demand forecasting & anomaly detection.


Building an Industry 4.

0 end-to-end demo set-up:
Industry 4.0 is a buzzword.

In practice it's all about capturing operational data from the production floor and the process of connecting this data to both contextual data and informational data.

This all with the ambition of turning it into actionable reports, alerts & insights.
In this traineeship, you will participate on building an internal end-to-end demo set-up.

This means working on different aspects such as the hardware (i.e., sensors & actual mini-representation of a factory floor) but also the cloud, analytics & data engineering side of stuff incl.

connecting with the data, transforming the data into insights & alerts and doing this all in the Azure Cloud & Databricks platform.


Accelerating ML research:

Building a Synthetic Data Generator:

As a (researching) Data Scientist at element61 you have a solid use-case but not always relevant data to test your new machine learning approach or new analytics pipeline.

To validate your use cases, you can use synthetic data which looks & feels almost identical to real data. Synthetic data is data that has similar distributions, examples, links across different tables, etc. as real-life data would have. The goal of this traineeship is to build a synthetic data generator to support in this process.
