YOUR TASKS

  • At least 90% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
  • You operate within an interuniversity team (Ghent University and Antwerp University) in a project that targets the study of the mechanical basis of evolutionary divergence in Darwin's finches (project funded by the Flemish Science Foundation).
  • You are responsible for making highspeed video recordings of beak movement and perform in vitro measurements of muscle contraction.
  • You study the histology, (3D)anatomy and mechanics of the jaw apparatus in multiple species of songbirds.
  • You work with live birds and fixed specimens.
  • You perform practical activities on specimens (histology, dissections,) and perform computer analysis (3D reconstructions and analyses).
  • You communicate about your research both within the team as towards external stakeholders (including laymen audience).
  • You report research results through publications in international scientific journals.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master's degree of Science in Biology or affiliated discipline.
  • You have demonstrable interest, knowledge and experience in anatomy and/or anatomical research.
  • Experience with histological research is recommended.
  • You have a demonstrable interest in experimental research with animals and in performing computer analyses.
  • Having acquired a certificate in laboratory animal sciences (level Felasa C) is recommended.
  • You are eager to learn and show an aptitude to work autonomously.
  • You function adequately within a team.
  • You show an interest in science communication to a broader audience.
  • You have demonstrable skills to communicate in English (orally and written format).

  • We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 4 years.
