YOUR TASKS


This doctoral research project aims at studying the nature and extent of (il)legal substance use among members of the Flemish Deaf Community, i.e.

a community characterized by a cultural-linguistic uniqueness that represents approximately 6000 deaf sign language persons in Flanders.

The research is based on a critical framework that states that sign language deaf individuals may be at increased risk of substance use and abuse.

In addition, sign language deaf people have unique risk factors related to culture, language, disability and membership of other minorities.


Your tasks are the following:
- an exhaustive review of national and international scientific literature on minority communities, deaf culture and community, substance use by persons with disabilities, substance use by deaf sign language people, risk factors for developing a substance use disorder, the perceptions and awareness about substance use, stigma, access to resources, personal drug use and the nature of drug use.

  • The preparation of indepth interviews in consultation with researchers, therapists and (deaf sign language) stakeholders, including members of the Flemish Deaf Community; preparation of ethical guidelines, recruitment of informants and planning of interviews; building topic lists, piloting and finetuning the instrument.
  • Conducting indepth interviews (with video registration) with members of the Flemish Deaf Community in Flemish Sign Language.
  • Preparation of at least two publications in peerreviewed journals, planning and organization of social valorisation and communication;


The research should contribute to theoretical insights into the personal and social context of substance use in the Flemish Deaf community, and can provide the necessary basis for writing recommendations regarding the treatment of deaf individuals who struggle with substance dependence or substance abuse.


WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You have a master's degree in Criminology, or Law, or Sociology, or Anthropology (or Comparative Culture Studies, or Pedagogy, or Psychology, or (Applied) Linguistics).
  • Experience with and knowledge of Flemish Sign Language (or other sign language), and/or familiarity with the Flemish Deaf community are particularly recommended.
  • Also recommended: experience with research into substance use, experience with qualitative research.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer you a contract of definite duration for a period of 1 year and 7 months.
  • Your contract will start on 1/05/2023 at the earliest. A later start date is negotiable.
