For this project, you will work as part of the "AlUla Inscriptions Corpus Analysis Project (AICAP)." This is a four-year collaboration between Ghent University and the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU).
The project will develop an online, accessible, long-term database of the inscriptions documented in the AlUla valley, in Saudi Arabia, by the RCU.
The inscriptions include texts from as early as the 6th century BC up to modern Arabic graffiti.
The goal of the project is to digitize and analyze the thousands of inscriptions that the RCU collected to understand and share AlUla's rich, intercultural history through the inscriptions of its historical residents and visitors, while also shedding new light on, among others, Ancient North Arabian languages and Arabic.
YOUR TASKS
- You will share the responsibility of running and administrating the project together with the PI.
- You will perform part of the administrative duties and be involved in the database design and quality control,
- You will mentor MA students who will contribute to the project,
- You will be responsible for the organization of different engagement and outreach activities,
- You will contribute your expertise to the Kingdom's Institute's archaeological conservation planning.
- You will lead the annual (re)survey seasons in the AlUla valley in Saudi Arabia together with the PI.
- You will be expected to design and teach courses on "Thamudic" and Nabataean epigraphy, and field methods, including the use of GIS for epigraphic research.
- Your research responsibilities will focus on the analysis of the Nabataean and Aramaic inscriptions and a part of the "Thamudic" corpus.
- You will transcribe, translate, and annotate the inscriptions related to these subcorpora.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold at least a Master's degree in history or archaeology of the region.
- You have indepth knowledge of the main epigraphic corpora of the region and its history (incl. Thamudic, Nabataean, Aramaic)
- You have fieldwork experience and a proven academic track record.
- You preferably have experience working with GIS data and epigraphic databases.
- Your English should be sufficient for effective academic communication and publication.
- You preferably have some command of Arabic.
- You are willing and able to spend significant time in Saudi Arabia for fieldwork and coordination.
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a contract of indefinite duration, for 0.8 fte, with financing until April 202
- Your contract will start on 1/07/2024 at the earliest.
- Your remuneration will be determined by salary scale WM1 to WM4 (if you hold a Master's degree). Click here for more information about our salary scales.
