We are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of veterinary anatomic pathologist to join us in our Early Solutions organization based in Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium.

About the role:

The pathology team is an integral chapter within Non-Clinical Safety Evaluation function of Early Clinical Development & Translational Science, which enables portfolio decisions through proactive and integrative pathology expertise and provides strategy and support to regulatory activities throughout the lifespan of projects, from target identification through to clinical studies

What you will do:

You will provide scientific evaluation and interpretation of pathology data, investigative pathology expertise, scientific and technical expertise in molecular pathology techniques, and digital pathology to drug discovery and development.

You will join a team of veterinary anatomic pathologists and scientists, deliver pathology peer review of repeat dose studies, conducted at Contract Research Organisations (CROs), and evaluate data that support target validation, translationally relevant efficacy research, and non-clinical safety evaluation in collaboration with other scientific disciplines.

You will be responsible for supporting potential drug targets and drug discovery projects assigned to you, with scientific engagement from early discovery through full development and regulatory approval.

These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Contribute to the design of in-vivo studies and provide histopathological microscopic examination, interpretation, and reporting of investigative, exploratory, and regulatory toxicology studies on candidate compounds to characterize safety or efficacy and enable decision-making or benefice-risk assessment in support of progressing these compounds to patients.
  • Provide scientific expertise to support target selection, target validation, animal model development, non-animal alternative models, discovery safety and efficacy to improve candidate profile, preclinical to clinical translatability and eventually reduce late stage attrition
  • Apply digital pathology solutions and molecular pathology techniques, in conjunction with histology scientists to support quantitative pathology.
  • Serve as Project Pathologist on assigned compounds, providing Pathology Peer Review for toxicology studies and provide expert pathology advice to Study Monitors, Safety representatives, Project Team Members, and stakeholders to facilitate appropriate and timely decision making.
  • Collaborate with the Histology team to develop new molecular pathology assay and markers to address specific project needs, apply new technologies that help progress compounds to patients and ensure delivery of high-quality project support.
  • Provide expert pathology evaluation of safety data on potential in-licensing candidates in order to assess their suitability for further development by UCB.

Ensure that all activities are carried out to the principles of GLP and to national and Company regulatory standards where applicable and comply with all appropriate environmental health and safety regulations to ensure a safe working environment.

For this position you'll need the following education, experience and skills:

Basic Qualifications:

  • FRCPath or Diplomate of ACVP or ECVP necessary
  • Veterinary degree (DVM, VMD, BVM&S, BVSc or equivalent) from an accredited veterinary school, or acceptable international equivalent in veterinary medicine
  • Specialization in Toxicologic Pathology, or Investigative Pathology.

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus, but not essential:

  • PhD in Pathology or related field
  • Previous expertise (5+ years) in toxicologic or investigative pathology from a contract research organization or pharmaceutical industry,
  • Knowledge of toxicology, laboratory animal science, immunopathology, genetic basis of disease, bioimaging, Tissue-based pathobiology expertise, drug discovery and drug development
  • Proven collaboration and communication skills with scientists in other disciplines
