Senior Automation Engineer, Life Sciences
Location: Diegem, Belgium
Do you enjoy working on industrial automation projects where you can take responsibility for your own engineering work, solve technical challenges and see the results at customer sites?
As a Senior Automation Engineer at Emerson, you will develop, configure and implement automation and process control solutions for customers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries.
You will work on different projects, each with its own technical requirements and challenges. Some assignments may take just a few weeks, while others can continue for a year or longer. Depending on the project, you may work independently on defined engineering activities or collaborate with a larger team of specialists.
Your work covers the engineering process from detailed design and configuration to testing, commissioning and handover. Throughout these stages, you will be responsible for delivering reliable technical solutions that meet both customer requirements and the quality standards of regulated production environments.
In This Role, Your Responsibilities Will Be:
- Perform detailed engineering, system configuration, integration and testing of industrial automation and process control systems.
- Translate approved customer requirements and technical specifications into functional automation solutions.
- Prepare and maintain engineering documentation, including Functional Specifications (FS), Design Specifications (DS), configuration records and test documentation.
- Plan and execute assigned engineering work packages, monitoring progress, technical risks and potential changes to the project scope.
- Prepare and support Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT), Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), commissioning and qualification activities at Emerson and customer sites.
- Troubleshoot technical issues, investigate root causes and implement effective solutions.
- Ensure engineering activities and documentation comply with Emerson's standards and applicable Life Sciences requirements, including cGMP, GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11 and data integrity principles.
- Work closely with Lead Engineers, Project Managers, customers and other technical specialists to coordinate engineering activities and resolve technical challenges.
- Participate in technical discussions and design reviews, providing input on system functionality and implementation.
- Share your knowledge with less experienced engineers and contribute to engineering improvements and best practices.
Depending on the assignment, you may be responsible for a specific technical work package within a larger project or manage the engineering activities of a smaller project yourself. You will have the opportunity to work with different customers and production processes, rather than focusing on the same installation every day.
For This Role, You Will Need:
- At least five years of relevant engineering experience, preferably within Life Sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals or another regulated process industry.
- Experience in industrial process automation, including detailed engineering, configuration, integration and testing of automation or process control systems.
- Practical knowledge of DCS or PLC systems and their applications in industrial production environments.
- An understanding of cGMP, GAMP 5, 21 CFR Part 11 and the documentation and quality requirements associated with regulated industries.
- Experience preparing technical documentation and working according to established engineering and validation procedures.
- The ability to work independently on complex technical assignments, identify issues and take responsibility for assigned deliverables.
- A bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, automation, instrumentation and control, chemical engineering or a related discipline. Equivalent relevant qualifications and experience will also be considered.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with customers and colleagues from different technical disciplines.
Additional Experience That Would Be Valuable
Experience with Emerson DeltaV is an advantage, as is knowledge of SCADA systems, historians, batch applications or system integration.
Familiarity with pharmaceutical manufacturing processes such as CIP/SIP, sterile manufacturing and batch processing would also be beneficial.
Relevant training or certification in GAMP 5, CSV, CQV, DeltaV, functional safety or industrial cybersecurity would be welcome.
