Official title: Senior Chemist - Chemical Process Development (CPD)
Location: Mortsel (Antwerp Province), Belgium | Employment information: Contract not disclosed; about 10% travel
This Senior Chemist post focuses on the practical and analytical work needed to turn chemical process concepts into industrially scalable processes. Within Chemical Process Development, the appointed professional is expected to balance experimental design with laboratory oversight, data analysis and reporting. The work calls for decisions that take technical feasibility and cost efficiency into account while managing more than one research project. Close cooperation with multidisciplinary teams, clear stakeholder communication and attention to safety, health and environmental standards are integral parts of the role rather than separate administrative tasks. That work includes resolving critical cases while maintaining clear communication with stakeholders throughout.
Responsibilities
- Develop chemical processes that are technically practical, cost-efficient and capable of industrial scaling.
- Set out experimental programmes through an organised approach guided by data.
- Coordinate laboratory scheduling, practical execution, analysis of results and reporting of findings.
- Introduce technologies that enable processes to progress from laboratory work to industrial scale.
- Work with multidisciplinary colleagues and assist with transferring processes into production.
- Oversee several research projects at the same time and address critical cases.
- Present information clearly to the relevant stakeholders.
- Work in accordance with safety, health and environmental standards.
Qualifications
- Hold a Master's degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry or a related discipline.
- Bring a proactive, hands-on laboratory approach and interest in deepening expertise in process technologies and chemical synthesis.
- Communicate strongly and contribute effectively to teamwork in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Organise and manage multiple projects in parallel.
- Have fluent Dutch and English, or be willing to learn Dutch.
- Be willing to undertake occasional short business travel of approximately 10%.
- Follow Agfa's safety, health and environmental standards.
- Preferred: Hold a PhD in a relevant field.
- Preferred: Bring experience with reaction calorimetry.
Skills and Competencies
- Organic and polymer chemistry knowledge applied to the development of chemical processes.
- Chemical synthesis understanding used to deepen process technology expertise.
- Chemical process development capability for technically feasible and cost-efficient process design.
- Process scale-up awareness for moving laboratory work towards industrial operation.
- Experimental design structured around evidence and data from laboratory work.
- Laboratory analysis and reporting used to interpret and communicate experimental results.
- Multidisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder communication applied during process transfer work.
- Project management and safety, health and environmental compliance across parallel research activity.
Benefits and Employment Information
- The role offers development exposure across organic and polymer chemistry, process development, analytical chemistry, colloid science and technology research fields.
- The stated offer includes collaboration with colleagues in different research areas and with external research facilities and companies.
- Internal and external training opportunities are available through a learning management system.
