Position Summary
The Staff Psychologist & Executive Functioning Specialist is a shared staff position serving Washington University School of Medicine students (70% Student Health Services/UME) and BJC/WashU residents and fellows (30% GME). The role provides diagnostic psychological testing, individualized psychotherapy, and executive functioning (EF) support to address mental health, academic, and professional performance challenges.
In-house psychological evaluations are a core focus, establishing diagnostic clarity—differentiating ADHD from depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, or burnout—to inform treatment planning and support board/academic accommodation requests.
Care is delivered via in-person and telehealth appointments in close collaboration with UME/GME therapists, psychiatrist, and primary care teams. Additionally, the psychologist provides doctoral-level consultation to GME Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) on complex cases and partners with clinic psychiatry to streamline evaluation workflows, expanding internal psychiatric visit capacity.
The position also contributes to educational programming and group interventions focused on mental health, executive functioning, stress management, and trainee resilience.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
Psychological Assessment and Testing
- In-House Assessment & Testing: Coordinate centralized psychological evaluations across UME and GME to establish diagnostic clarity with special attention to distinguishing attention/EF deficits from conditions like depression, anxiety, sleep deprivation, or burnout.
- Testing Administration & Reporting: Select, administer, score, and interpret standardized instruments, producing clear, timely evaluation reports and conducting patient feedback sessions.
- Recommendations & Accommodations: Formulate treatment plans, EF intervention strategies, academic or board exam accommodation recommendations, and outside referrals when appropriate.
- Interprofessional Consultation & Capacity: Consult with referring providers and partner with clinic psychiatry to assume time-intensive evaluations, freeing up MD capacity to retain complex GME psychiatric visits in-house.
Clinical Psychological Services & Executive Functioning Support
- Psychotherapy & Intake: Conduct intakes, individual psychotherapy, group counseling, crisis triage, and referrals to expand clinical access and reduce student wait times.
- Executive Functioning Coaching: Deliver individual and group EF coaching focused on time management, organization, study strategies, board exam prep, and clinical task prioritization.
- Student Mental Health: Address psychological, emotional, and environmental challenges affecting trainees’ functioning, well-being, and professional growth.
- Care Coordination: Collaborate with UME leadership and multidisciplinary care teams to manage referrals, treatment plans, and in-person/telehealth service delivery.
Documentation and Administrative Responsibilities
- EHR & Compliance Standards: Maintain complete, confidential clinical records and non-clinical administrative documentation in accordance with HIPAA, departmental policies, and ethical guidelines.
- Volume Tracking & Operational Reporting: Track testing volume, clinical activity, and referral patterns to oversee resource allocation and support the joint 70/30 staffing arrangement and departmental reporting needs.
- Office & Clinic Operations: Participate in clinic operational meetings, maintain standardized administrative procedures, and manage general non-patient care tasks.
Consultation, Education, and Program Development
- Doctoral-level Consultation: Provide doctoral-level clinical consultation support to GME Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs) on complex or high-acuity clinical cases.
- Provider & Leadership Consultation: Consult with providers and leadership to promote a psychologically informed approach to student/trainee well-being.
- Team Collaboration & IBH: Partner with existing therapy staff (2 UME Psychologists, 2 GME LPCs) to enhance EF protocols. Strengthen integrated behavioral health (IBH) warm hand-offs with primary care.
