Official title: Laborant — Engis (Laboratory Technician)
Location: Engis (Liège Province), Belgium | Employment information: Full-time; on-site at the Engis aggregates production site
Within the Engis Quality Department, the Laboratory Technician (Aggregates Quality) provides the factual testing and follow-up that supports aggregate product-quality control. The work begins with correctly obtained and prepared samples, continues through standardised analysis and computer-based recording, and extends to communicating results that may require production action. It also involves preventive thinking: recognising potential deviation risks, helping to identify their source and proposing corrective or improvement measures. Proper laboratory-equipment use, participation in quality discussions and audit activity are part of the stated remit, alongside compliance with site quality, safety and environmental instructions.
Responsibilities
- Collect samples and carry out analyses in line with the specified procedures and testing frequencies.
- Record analysis outcomes in the laboratory's designated computer tools.
- Check and follow the quality of products manufactured at the Engis aggregates operation.
- Recognise departures from requirements and communicate them promptly to production and Quality colleagues.
- Relate test findings to actions that need to be taken on the production line.
- Contribute to early identification of deviation risks and put forward corrective or improvement actions.
- Oversee the appropriate use of laboratory equipment in cooperation with the central laboratory.
- Take part in quality meetings and internal and external audits while observing quality, safety and environmental instructions.
- Perform standard tests covering sample preparation, quartering, washing, drying, particle-size analysis, flakiness coefficient, cleanliness, methylene-blue value and sand equivalent or flow testing.
- Build knowledge of manufacturing processes and installations to help trace quality issues and, after training and autonomous practice, support the wider Quality team, especially the Engis laboratory technician.
Qualifications
- Hold an upper-secondary education diploma or bring equivalent professional experience.
- Demonstrate rigour, punctuality and close attention to detail in practical work.
- Use critical thinking when assessing results or situations.
- Work independently, organise time effectively and contribute as part of a team.
- Be comfortable with computer tools and willing to learn the laboratory's dedicated tools.
- Be at ease with field work and contact with production teams, and communicate clearly when a result or situation needs intervention.
- Select fluent spoken and written language or languages on the application form from French, Dutch and English; no driving-licence requirement is stated.
- Hold valid authorisation to work in the European Union, as visa or work-permit sponsorship is not available.
- Preferred: Bring initial experience in a laboratory, production, industrial or materials setting.
Skills and Competencies
- Apply sampling and laboratory sample-preparation practices to aggregate materials.
- Carry out standardised aggregate or material tests with careful adherence to procedure.
- Use particle-size analysis as part of the stated testing programme.
- Monitor product quality and report non-conforming findings to the appropriate colleagues.
- Recognise deviation risks early and contribute to corrective-action thinking.
- Follow laboratory equipment use in coordination with the central laboratory.
- Enter results accurately in computer-based laboratory information tools.
- Communicate clearly with production personnel when findings require action.
- Balance independent organisation with effective collaboration in the Quality Department.
