Electromechanical Maintenance Technician – Rail

A role for an experienced technician who wants to remain hands-on while enjoying autonomy and responsibility. You will work on specialised installations in the rail sector. Experience as a lead technician, team leader or site supervisor is certainly welcome.

The company

Buhlmann is a Belgian engineering company founded in 1931, with strong expertise in rail technology and industrial engineering. From its base in Zaventem, Buhlmann combines technical expertise, project management, installation and maintenance of specialised systems.

Within Rolling Stock, Buhlmann works on both rail and tram infrastructure and rolling stock. Its activities include signalling, maintenance equipment and technical systems for railways and trams. Buhlmann is involved not only in supply and installation, but also in service and maintenance throughout the systems’ operational life.

You will join a compact technical organisation where technicians, engineers and project managers work closely together. Communication lines are short, and experienced technicians are given the scope to assess situations independently and take responsibility in the field.

Function

You will spend around 90% of your time in the field. Working with a colleague, you will carry out maintenance, inspections and technical interventions on specialised installations in the rail environment. Most assignments are in Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent, with additional interventions elsewhere.

• Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on technical installations.
• Analyse and resolve mechanical, electromechanical and electrical faults.
• Assess technical situations independently and help determine the appropriate course of action.
• Carry out measurements, inspections and interventions using professional tools and test equipment.
• Liaise with colleagues, engineers and project managers.
• Depending on your experience, coordinate activities and take a leading role in the field.

Rail experience is an advantage, but not essential. You bring a solid technical background and relevant practical experience; Buhlmann will teach you the specific installations, procedures and safety requirements of the rail environment. Experience in industrial maintenance, machine building, installation engineering or field service can be highly relevant.

After your induction period, you will take part in the on-call rota. Urgent night-time interventions are limited to a few occasions per year. In addition, there is on average around one planned night intervention per month, with time off in lieu afterwards.

Profile

We are looking for an experienced technician who knows the trade, can tackle technical problems independently and takes responsibility for safe, high-quality execution.

• Several years of relevant practical experience in maintenance, industrial installations, machine building, field service or a comparable technical environment.
• Strong foundation in mechanics and electromechanics, complemented by sufficient electrical knowledge.
• You analyse problems methodically, work independently and consult others when the situation requires it.
• You enjoy field work and are comfortable in a role involving travel to different sites.
• Experience as a lead technician, team leader or site supervisor is an advantage; even in such a role, you still want to remain technically involved.
• You can communicate operationally in Dutch and/or French and have sufficient English for technical communication.

Buhlmann offers a varied technical role in which your experience is put to good use. You will have autonomy in the field and, depending on your background, can also take on coordinating responsibilities without moving away from the technical work.

• Gross monthly salary of approximately €3,500 to €5,500, depending on experience and level of responsibility.

• Net expense allowance of approximately €325 per month; approximately €445 per month when participating in the on-call rota, plus €50 per on-call week.
