Senior Research Scientist (part-time, f/m) in Migration and Development
- Ref: 26-35
- 24-monthfixed-term working contract at LISER
- Part-time, 8 hours/week
The Crossing Borders & Migration (CBM) research programme at LISER studies the causes and consequences of human mobility across regional and national borders, combining rigorous empirical methods with novel data sources to inform policy in Luxembourg, Europe and beyond. Migration and development is a core and growing research line of the programme. It covers internal and international migration, labour markets and structural transformation in low- and middle-income countries, forced displacement, and the role of public policy – from social protection and public employment programmes to development aid – in shaping mobility decisions and their consequences for migrants, sending regions and receiving labour markets.
To further strengthen this research line, LISER seeks to appoint an internationally leading senior economist on a part-time basis. The successful candidate will act as senior researcher and strategic advisor to the CBM Programme Leader, contribute to shaping the department’s research agenda and its positioning within European research networks and funding schemes, and engage closely with CBM researchers and doctoral candidates. The position is compatible with a primary appointment at another academic institution.
Your role
In this context, the successful candidate will have the following missions:
- Conduct and publish high-impact research on migration and development, in particular on rural–urban and seasonal migration, the labour market effects of migration, and the links between migration, firms and structural transformation in developing and emerging economies;
- Provide strategic advice to the Programme Leader on the programme’s research agenda, recruitment and international positioning;
- Initiate and co-author joint research projects with CBM researchers, drawing on large-scale administrative, census and survey data as well as field experiments;
- Contribute to the preparation of competitive grant applications (e.g. ERC, Horizon Europe, MSCA Doctoral Networks, FNR);
- Mentor and co-supervise PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers, and contribute to doctoral training activities;
- Contribute to the scientific life of the programme (seminars, workshops, conferences) and strengthen LISER’s links with leading European research institutions and networks;
- Disseminate research results to policymakers and international organisations.
Your profile
- PhD in Economics;
- Full or associate professor position, or equivalent, at a leading international research institution;
- Outstanding publication record in top general-interest and field journals in development, labour and migration economics;
- Internationally recognised expertise on internal and international migration in developing and emerging economies;
- Extensive experience with causal inference methods, large-scale administrative and survey data, and the design and implementation of field experiments, including collaborations with governments and international organisations;
- Track record in attracting competitive research funding and in supervising PhD students;
- Affiliation with leading international research networks (e.g. CEPR, BREAD, J-PAL or equivalent) and editorial or refereeing experience for leading journals;
- Excellent command of English; knowledge of French is an asset.
