A26/26 : Head of Internal Medicine Department
CHU Saint-Pierre is hiring a Head of Department for its Internal Medicine Department
Description of the Internal Medicine Department :
The internal medicine department at CHU Saint-Pierre includes both inpatient and outpatient consultation activities.
It has 111 approved beds distributed across 4 wards shared with internal medicine's sub-specialties, namely cardiology, oncology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology.
17 common trunk postgraduates handle internal medicine care in these wards, while patient care for the sub-specialties is provided by senior physicians and postgraduates from those respective specialties.
Internship supervision is currently provided by an infectious disease specialist, as is the management of the general internal medicine clinics, pending the appointment of a Head of the Internal Medicine Department.
The internal medicine department works in consultation with the infectious diseases department—which manages 30 beds spread across two 15-bed wards and one 10-bed long-stay ward for tuberculosis patients—as well as with the various surgical departments for consultations.
Patients are referred to the 111 internal medicine beds primarily through the emergency department (which handles nearly 80,000 visits per year) and, to a lesser extent, through consultations.
3 senior physicians currently share the supervision of these wards.
Outpatient consultations are limited; they cater to patients with autoimmune or systemic diseases. Internal medicine also participates in several multidisciplinary consultations involving ophthalmologists, dermatologists, rheumatologists, etc.
CHU Saint-Pierre aims to transform the internal medicine clinic into an internal medicine department by hiring a Head of Department capable of revitalizing its activity and timely taking over internship supervision and the management of the general clinics.
One of the major challenges is to boost consultation activities by reinforcing the expertise already present.
The Head of Department is also, quite naturally, a member of the hospital's Internal Medicine College. This college brings together all the heads of department of the internal medicine sub-specialties and harmoniously coordinates internal medicine activities—in the broad sense of the term—within the institution. The chairmanship of this college is currently shared among the heads of department while awaiting the appointment of the Head of the Internal Medicine Department.
Additionally, on January 1, 2027, CHU Saint-Pierre will form a group with HUB and the Iris-Sud hospitals.
In this context, the Head of the Internal Medicine Department will be required to actively participate in the college of internal medicine heads of department, bringing together the heads of department from the three entities. The objective of this inter-hospital college is to define how to guarantee that all patients in the healthcare regions of the three institutions benefit from rapid access to specialized consultations; where applicable, for certain advanced activities concentrated on a single site, to determine which care pathways must be built; and to pursue any other collaboration deemed to improve the quality of patient care. The college of internal medicine heads of department will be supervised and assisted in its work by a deputy medical director of the HUBs, the name of the future group.
