What you will do
You will support a public-sector environmental team in modelling soil erosion and sediment transport to waterways, including the impact of erosion control measures. The work centres on the CN-WS model, originally developed by a university research group and written in FreePascal using the open-source Lazarus package. Spatial data (input and output) is handled as IDRISI-format rasters, which can be created and read in IDRISI, QGIS and ArcGIS.
A sub-model (WaTEM/SEDEM) has been optimised, recalibrated and operationalised in Python (pycnws), but it still needs further expansion, restructuring, documentation and operationalisation.
Your tasks include:
- Implementing model improvements and extensions in the Python code (pycnws)
- Maintaining, restructuring and documenting the Python codebase on GitHub
- Working with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS) and spatial raster data
- Using Jupyter Notebook, PostgreSQL and PostGIS in your workflow
This work is part of the river basin management plans for 2023–2027, specifically the development of erosion control scenarios for priority areas where sediment flows into waterways and sewerage systems.
What we are looking for
- Demonstrable experience with modelling (5 years, medior level)
- Demonstrable experience with WaTEM/SEDEM (3 years, medior level)
- Demonstrable experience with the technology in question or similar (5 years, medior level)
- Demonstrable experience with Python
- Demonstrable experience with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS)
- Demonstrable experience with PostgreSQL and PostGIS
- Demonstrable experience with Jupyter Notebook
- Demonstrable knowledge of erosion and sediment issues
- Dutch at CEFR level C2
- A higher education degree (bachelor or master) with a technical or engineering background, or equivalent experience with the ICT technologies required
- Experience in the public sector is a strong advantage
The setting
This assignment runs from November 2026 to mid-July 2027, with an estimated 896 hours at 50% capacity. The role is based in Brussels, with up to 50% remote work possible.
You will work within a public-sector environmental planning team responsible for research, monitoring and evaluation of soil protection policy, with erosion control as a key priority. The team leads on sediment reduction to waterways as part of river basin management, using modelling to target the most effective measures in the areas with the highest sediment flow.
Dutch is the working language.
