Electronic Design Engineer — build the electronics behind our drones
AtSol.Onein Bruges, we build autonomous drone systems, counter-UAS solutions and certified avionics. Not hobby projects, but machines that really fly, really work and that lives depend on. Our systems guard ports and coastlines, carry out rescue and resupply missions and protect critical infrastructure. Behind all of that is hardware that you can design.
For 14 years we have been building EASA-certified aviation electronics, we take part in European and Belgian Defence programs, and we are currently setting up an 8,000 m² production site in Evergem (near Ghent). In short: a scale-up with serious plans — and your electronics will fly along.
What you will do
As anElectronic Design Engineer, you are responsible for the electronics of one or more Sol.One products, from start to finish: requirements, architecture, schematic, PCB, bring-up, qualification and handover to production. You design mixed analog/digital boards for systems in the air and on the ground, where reliability, traceability and safety always come first.
You will join theElectronics team led by our VP Electronics— the team that designs the flight and mission computers, ARM processing modules, power electronics, battery management and avionics interfaces, from schematic to certified product.
In practice, that means:
- Translating system and customer requirements into board-level hardware architecture.
- Designing schematics for embedded processing (SoC/FPGA, e.g. Zynq UltraScale+), high-speed memory, power engineering (DC-DC, battery management) and avionics/vehicle interfaces (CAN, RS-422/485, Ethernet, PWM, discrete I/O).
- Developing or supervising multilayer PCBs in KiCad or Mentor EDA — including stack-up, impedance, power integrity and DFM/DFT.
- Performing design analyses: worst-case, power budget, thermal, derating, MTBF and FMEA input for safety assessments.
- Selecting components with an eye on lifecycle, obsolescence and second sourcing.
- Bringing first prototypes to life in the lab, debugging them, and writing test procedures and reports.
- Preparing and supporting environmental and EMC qualifications (DO-160 / MIL-STD-461 / MIL-STD-810).
- Producing DO-254 supplier data and taking part in peer and formal reviews.
- Collaborating with firmware, software, mechanics and production — and guiding EMS partners during industrialisation.
- Contributing to better processes, templates and design guidelines.
Who we are looking for
You don’t have to be a jack-of-all-trades who has done everything before. These are the basic requirements:
- Master’s degree in electronics, electrical engineering or industrial engineering (electronics/ICT), or a bachelor’s degree with equivalent proven experience.
- 3+ years of hands-on experiencein hardware design, from schematic to a working, tested product.
- Experience with mixed analog/digital boards with embedded processors or FPGAs.
- Multilayer PCB design in an EDA tool (KiCad, Siemens, Altium, Cadence or similar) and boards taken into production.
- Confident in the lab: oscilloscope, logic analyser, power analyser, spectrum analyser, structured debugging.
- Experience with a documented, quality-oriented development process.
- Fluent English (our working language), written and spoken.
- Right to work in Belgium and willingness to undergo a security screening for defence programmes.
A big plus
(but not a must): experience with DO-254, UAV/avionics/defence electronics, KiCad as a daily tool, battery management systems, Zynq UltraScale+ bring-up, RF and wireless links, motor control, embedded C, or IPC standards. Dutch or French is a nice bonus. What we certainly won’t forget: you will grow with us in design analysis, EMC and DO-254 design assurance. You don’t need to master all of that already — you will learn it from our experienced colleagues, or we will provide training.
What kind of person you are
- Ownership: you take a design from idea to qualified product and remain responsible when something comes up in test or production.
- Accuracy: you document decisions, keep requirements traceable and see reviews as a tool to get better.
- Pragmatism: you balance certification-grade quality with scale-up pace and know when a quick prototype is the right solution.
- Collaboration: you work smoothly with colleagues from the software, mechanics or integration team, and with external EMS partners.
- Clear communication: you explain technical trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers alike.
- Curiosity and resilience: you persevere, share knowledge, and stay calm and structured during bring-up, debuggin
