Senior / Staff Backend Engineer | Ghent or Liege | Freelance or Payroll
I’m working exclusively with a leading European digital product business that is continuing to invest heavily in its engineering organisation in Ghent and Liege.
We’re looking for Senior and Staff-level Backend Engineers who want to stay hands-on while having broader influence over architecture, technical direction and how products are built.
This isn’t a role where you’ll simply be picking up tickets. We’re looking for engineers who can take genuine ownership, challenge technical decisions and help improve the engineering environment around them.
What you’ll be doing:
- Designing and building complex backend applications and services
- Taking ownership of technical and architectural decisions
- Working closely with Product and other engineering teams
- Improving engineering standards, quality and maintainability
- Contributing to the evolution of existing products and platforms
- At Staff level, providing technical leadership and mentoring other engineers
We’re interested in people with:
- Strong professional backend/software engineering experience
- Experience working on complex, production-grade systems
- Good understanding of software architecture and engineering principles
- A product mindset rather than purely task-based development
- Experience taking technical ownership and influencing engineering decisions
- For Staff level, evidence of technical leadership across a wider team or domain
