ABOUT GHENT UNIVERSITY

Ghent University is a world of its own. Employing more than 15,000 people, it is actively involved in education and research, management and administration, as well as technical and social service provision on a daily basis. It is one of the largest, most exciting employers in the area and offers great career opportunities. With its 11 faculties and more than 80 departments offering state-of-the-art study programmes grounded in research in a wide range of academic fields, Ghent University is a logical choice for its staff and students.

YOUR TASKS

  • You will join the BioCAT research team working on valirosation of research outcomes of an innovative Ghent University project combining artificial intelligence, medical imaging and computational biomechanics to support patient-specific assessment and planning in orthopedic surgery. The project is in an early valorisation phase, translating academic research into an integrated software and a pathway towards clinical adoption and potential licensing.
  • You will conduct market and competitor analyses and identify prospective users, customers, industry partners and routes to commercialisation. You will coordinate and document interviews with orthopaedic surgeons, clinical stakeholders and medical technology companies, translating their feedback into user needs and product requirements. You will support the technical team with software testing, documentation and further development of the research demonstrator.
  • You will help collect, structure, pseudonymise, quality-check and manage multicentre research data in accordance with data-protection requirements. You will assist with CT image processing and analysis of 3D anatomical models and biomechanical outputs.
  • Together with specialist colleagues and external advisers, you will explore future regulatory requirements, including the EU MDR, applicable AI legislation, software quality, clinical evaluation and cybersecurity, and contribute to a preliminary regulatory and valorisation roadmap. You will report on progress and collaborate closely with researchers, clinicians and Ghent University TechTransfer.
  • You will support efforts to secure follow-up funding by documenting the knowledge gained and future development needs, translating these into well-founded project proposals and funding applications.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • You hold a Master's degree in (bio)medical sciences, rehabilitation sciences, health sciences or a closely related relevant field.
  • You have strong analytical, organisational and interpersonal skills, with an interest in medical technology, imaging, software and/or clinical research. You can translate technical findings into practical user requirements and work independently, accurately and collaboratively. You handle confidential information and research data responsibly.
  • You communicate effectively in English; knowledge of Dutch is an asset.
  • Experience with Python or MATLAB, image processing, data management, market research, business development or medical-software regulation is an advantage, not a requirement. You are motivated to learn across disciplines.

WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU

  • We offer a 12-month fixed-term contract, with the possibility of extension subject to the successful acquisition of the aforementioned follow-up funding.
  • Your contract will start on 1/01/2027 at the earliest.
  • All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full-time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.

As Ghent University maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy, everyone is encouraged to apply for this position.
