YOUR TASKS
This vacancy concerns a position for a postdoctoral researcher in the context of a multidisciplinary project to classify materials in waste streams, including using X-rays. The goal is to optimally use the spectral capacities of a new generation of X‑ray detectors to classify different metals within a mixed waste stream.
To achieve this, both ‘conventional’ photon‑counting and hyperspectral X‑ray detectors will be evaluated, fully exploiting the complementarity of both types. Specifically, you’ll be performing the following tasks:
- You set up a simulation framework for both conventional photon‑counting and hyperspectral X‑ray detectors with high‑Z sensors.
- You validate this framework for a few specific detectors.
- You use this framework to perform a thorough sensitivity study
- You use this framework to generate input data for material classification, based on experimental data which you acquire.
- You publish the research results in scientific journals and present at international conferences
- You contribute to the supervision of master and PhD students
At least 70% of your assignment will be spent on academic research.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
- You hold a thesis‑based doctorate (obtained max. 6 years ago. This term of 6 years is determined by the date written on the above‑mentioned required diploma) in the fields of physics, engineering or equivalent.
- You have experience with experimental setups for high‑resolution X‑ray imaging and their applications
- You have good programming skills for image processing, image analysis and/or hardware control.
- You are eager to learn, can work independently and have a creative and solution‑driven mindset
- You have an excellent track record concerning scientific publications and presenting research results on the topic of photon‑counting X‑ray detectors and/or their applications.
- Experience in supervising master and PhD students is a plus
- You have a good command of English, both spoken and written
WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOU
- We offer you a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 30 months
- Your contract will start on 1/11/2026 at the earliest.
- All Ghent University staff members enjoy a number of benefits, such as a wide range of training and education opportunities, 36 days of holiday leave (on an annual basis for a full‑time job) supplemented by annual fixed bridge days, a bicycle allowance and eco vouchers.. for a complete overview of all the staff benefit
As Ghent University maintains an equal opportunities and diversity policy, everyone is encouraged to apply for this position.
IMPORTANT NOTE
A deviation from the advertized position may be proposed for postdoctoral researchs who are eligible for a scholarship. More information can be found here.
