The Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp is seeking a forward-thinking Technology Specialist to enhance the learning experiences within our Biomedical Sciences Department. This role focuses on integrating cutting-edge technological innovations into postgraduate and PhD programs, including our MSc in Global One Health and various specialized short courses.
About Us
The Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Institute of Tropical Medicine (ITM) in Antwerp is internationally recognized for its comprehensive research on significant and often neglected pathogens—including parasites, mycobacteria, and viruses—and the vectors that transmit them. The department's work encompasses understanding pathogen-host-vector interactions, studying how these organisms adapt to changing environments, and innovating tools to enhance the diagnosis, surveillance, prevention, treatment, and control of infectious diseases. By integrating field-based epidemiological studies with advanced laboratory research, the department aims to alleviate the global burden of tropical infectious diseases
The Biomedical Sciences Department’s education portfolio is designed for international students seeking to strengthen or deepen their research skills in basic or translational research on the biology, ecology, and epidemiology of selected pathogens and their hosts and vectors. The portfolio is managed by the Departmental Education Coordinator, to whom you will report
Job description
  • Technological Integration : you will identify and implement the latest technological trends to enrich student learning across online, blended, and on-campus course formats.
  • Faculty Collaboration: you will partner with teaching staff and educational coordinators to design and develop instructional materials that leverage technology for improved educational outcomes.
  • Student Support : you will assist students in utilizing technological tools, including AI applications, to enhance their learning experiences.
  • LMS Management: you will oversee the administration and optimization of the departmental materials on the Moodle Learning Management System, ensuring its effective use in course delivery and assessment .
  • Training and Development : you will conduct training sessions and provide ongoing support for faculty and students on the effective use of educational technologies.
  • Research and Evaluation: you will stay informed about emerging educational technologies and assess their potential impact on teaching and learning within the department.
  • Network: you will build an internal and external network of contacts in your field of expertise.
Profile Educational Background
  • You hold a Master degree in Life Sciences, Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • A background in or affinity with (bio)medical research is a strong plus.
Experience
  • You have experience in developing instructional materials (preferably at postgraduate level) that integrate technology to enhance learning outcomes.
  • You have experience in conducting training sessions and providing ongoing support on the effective use of educational technologies.
Technical proficiency
  • Proficiency in administering and managing Moodle or similar LMS platforms is crucial. This includes content creation, user management, system configuration, and troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with AI tools and their application in education, as well as experience with various educational software and multimedia tools (e.g. Adobe Creative Cloud, Articulate360, Turnitin,Zoom,Kahoot,Padlet), is essential.
Additional Skills
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with staff and students. Fluent in English and Dutch (or willing to learn Dutch).
  • A commitment to staying current with emerging technological trends and assessing their applicability in an educational context.
  • You can adapt to varying workloads throughout the academic year and evolving job content.
  • You are quick to take on responsibility.
  • You are assertive and have integrity.
  • You are team-oriented but can work independently.
  • You can easily deal with strict deadlines.
