**Description**

DC1 will (i) expand this model with smaller scale models (including transport properties calculated by Molecular Dynamics (MD) during the one-month secondment), (ii) develop and assess sub-models with reduced complexity and dimensionality, (iii) incorporate interfaces to the detailed, smaller-scale membrane and catalyst models and build a tool capable to perform analysis at various fidelity levels/costs by emphasizing on the gas diffusion layer (GDL) / micro porous layer (MPL) structure of the PEMFC (iv) train/use Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools to replicate the involved physical phenomena, (v) program the adjoint to the background model and run gradient-based optimisation, (vi) set up low-cost hierarchical search processes (using evolutionary algorithms) to optimise the PEMFC topology, identify GDL/MPL structures & material characteristics for max. mass & electron transports.

The second 18-month period DC1 activities will be carried out at the
**Zografou Campus of NTUA in Athens, Greece**. The PCOpt/NTUA group consists of about 15 people, including 4 experienced researchers, among which the developers of the open-source, publicly available adjointOptimisationFoam library (to be extended in this project). Apart from the PhD thesis supervisor (Prof. K. Giannakoglou), researchers of the PCOpt/NTUA Unit with previous experience in similar tasks (OpenFOAM, adjoint methods, evolutionary algorithms, AI, PEMFCs) will support DC1 in her/his project/PhD. The PCOpt/NTUA Unit possesses a powerful multiprocessor platform, including both CPU and GPU clusters, which is expected to be upgraded during the project life; this will support the research to be performed by the DC1.

**Eligibility criteria**:
Applicants can be of any nationality and must hold a Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, relevant to the aforementioned topics. They need to fully respect the following eligibility criteria:

Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Belgium for more than 12 months within the 36 months immediately before their date of recruitment.
