**In the framework of an international project coordinated by industry on the development of positioning in GNSS-denied environments, the Royal Military Academy is looking for a **full-time researcher with a Masters degree in Applied Sciences / Engineering Sciences / Physics / Computer Science / Informatics **.

You conduct scientific research within the Communication, Information, Systems and Sensors (CISS) department of the Royal Military Academy, together with a multi-national research team and in close collaboration with several Belgian and European companies. The project you work on is entitled ¿MarsEUs¿ for Modular ARchitecture Solutions for European Union States and aims at developing future missile systems.

**Project:
The position of a UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is most commonly obtained using GNSS, i.e., one of the constellations Gallileo, GPS, Glonass, Beidu. However, the signals from these constellations is often jammed or tempered with in contested areas. The consequence is that theses signals cannot be used to obtain one's own position, at least not with a reliable accuracy. There is thus a requirement to be able to position the UAV using other means. Besides the use of an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit, i.e., accelerometers and gyroscopes) which may be affected by a certain drift, one may consider Image Based Navigation (IBN). This consists in comparing the image captured by the UAV and previous geo-coded images of the same area typically acquired using a space-based sensor. This is linked to the well known SLAM (Simultaneous Location and Mapping).
The aim of this project is to further enhance and develop such system, amongst other to determine the methods achieving the best location accuracy, to determine the feasibility of on-board processing or to what extend that can be achieved and/or what are the requirements for it to be achievable. Test flights will be conducted and will be used to further validate the system, verify the assumptions and confirm the achieved accuracy.
The expected outcome of the project is a set of algorithms implementing the functions above and an assessment of the feasibility of these functions on-board a UAV. An evaluation the associated performance is to be conducted. In collaboration with the industrial partners, an implementation / demonstration of some of these functions is also expected.
The project is expected to finish in December 2025.
**Main Tasks**
- Develop and refine image correlation, taking into account the possibly unknown attitude of the UAV.
- Develop and refine position and attitude extraction methods.
- Evaluate the feasibility and associated requirement for on-board implementation of the selected methods.
- Evaluate the developed algorithms and disseminate the results through publication in the scientific literature and participation to scientific conferences.

**Technical skills**
The applicant shall have a Masters degree in Applied Sciences / Engineering Sciences / Physics / Computer Sciences / Informatics. Specific competencies sought are training or experience in remote sensing and associated processing.
- Training or experience in the remote sensing / image processing / signal processing is required;
- Training or experience in programming is required;
- Knowledge of python is required.
- Experience with complex software architectures assemblies, deployment and testing (e.g. Docker) is recommended.
