**MAIN DUTIES**

The Rail Expert will be a key reference in UITP for Urban Rail relative topics, and member of the UITP Rail Unit, within the Knowledge and Innovation (K&I) Department.

This includes, in particular, the provision of expertise and technical added value both to the rail Committees (Metro, Light Rail, Regional and Suburban Railways) and to projects funded by the European Commission and other EU and International Institutions, in which the Unit is involved.

He/She will work in close contact with the Rail Unit Managers and the Rail Officer, actively contributing to the activities of the Unit, managing the team and assuring activities are in line with the strategic plans, budget and processes.

He/She will contribute to the production of technical UITP and project publications, and to strategic documents for which UITP contribution will be required, in close contact with the K&I Department Director and Deputy Directors.

**Responsibilities**:

- Provide expertise in the field of urban rail and all the related technical aspects of rail systems; as such be a key knowledge reference for Urban and Sub-urban Rail topics, through:

- Provision of technical contributions to the activities of the Rail Unit, in particular technical deliverables of projects and UITP publications in the field of urban rail
- Revision of all urban rail-related K&I publications, in close liaison with the authors and the K&I Director and Deputy Directors;
- Coordinate at strategical and technical level of UITP Rail Unit activities that implement the UITP Integrated Global Work Programme in line with the UITP strategic priorities, including supervision of Committees’ work and EU or other Institutions’ co-funded research projects
- Actively contribute to Establish UITP priorities for urban rail activities, interacting with UITP members from the different regions by identifying their needs and coordinating the measures to support them, in liaison with the Rail Unit Managers, and in coordination with the K&I Director and Deputy Directors;
- Actively contribute to the creation, identification and exploitation of Funded Projects opportunities, in particular in the frame of the new EU Rail research partnership, promoting the presence and role of urban rail stakeholders and the research priorities of urban and suburban rail stakeholders
- Supervise and contribute to UITP Academy activities (trainings, peer reviews ) related to urban rail, in close liaison with the Head of Training
- Participate in meetings, workshops, congresses, conferences and all relevant events, representing UITP
- Promote the association positions by representing urban rail interests in the various UITP Bodies and Platforms at European and International level;
- Manage the UITP Rail Unit within the K&IDepartment, in liaison with the Rail Unit Managers, the Rail Officer and under the supervision of the UITP Knowledge and Innovation Director and Deputy Directors
- Coordinate the definition of the UITP Strategy for urban rail, contributing to the UITP Integrated Global Work Programme and ensuring that it is in line with the UITP strategic priorities,
- Fulfil his/her mission according to the internal culture based on RISE values (Respect, Innovation, Sharing, Expertise), the code of conduct, and on the principles of caring management, providing the colleagues with guidance, leadership and support, ensuring their development and well-being, while being responsible for enforcing corporate policies and procedures standards.

**PROFILE***:

- University degree or equivalent;
- Proven expertise in the rail sector. Deep knowledge of rail operational aspects, asset management, maintenance, automation and of the most disruptive trends affecting the rail sector (digitalisation, automation, connectivity, etc.) will be particularly appreciated;
- Proven experience in working in an international context and liaising with stakeholders from different countries;
- Excellent written and spoken English. Knowledge of other languages will be considered as an asset;
- Public speaking skills. Training skills will be considered as an asset;
- Proven capacity to write high level documents/publications;
- Capacity to work both as part of a team (managing groups of people) but also autonomously;
- Expertise/understanding of the European Commission (or other Institutions) co-funded projects will be considered as an asset;
- Familiarity with European Institutions rail related bodies (S2R JU, ERRAC) and their functioning will be considered an asset;
- IT literate;
- Good relational competences (ability to listen, empathy, ability to handle conflicts, teamwork, positivity, enthusiasm);
- Sense of initiative, problem solving, analytical thinking, proactivity;
- Ability to manage time and prioritise tasks, within tight time constraints;
- Excellent planning and organisational skills;
- Flexibility and service mindedness, ability to work in a multi-cultural environment.
