The role will focus on tracking, understanding and explaining highly political and topical policy themes impacting goods and services trade, including how new and future compliance frameworks impact international and internationalising businesses in a range of areas, including EU environmental and broader sustainability, economic security and industrial policy.

**Role and responsibilities**:

- Tracking and analysis of developments for clients on a wide range of relevant policy issues impacting trade in goods and investments. Provide advice on the implications of environmental policy, sustainability and circular economy legislations on internationalised firms and their cross-border supply chains and distribution networks. These include: the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism, Global Arrangement on Steel and Aluminium, the Eco-Design Regulation and secondary legislation, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation among others.
- Identifying the impact from these policy, regulatory developments and changes to cross border trade and investment regimes for client’s supply chains and investments as well as risk mitigating strategies where relevant.
- Leading projects and/or retainer workstreams within the trade & industrial policy practice to support clients in responding to policy and regulatory risks, including by proactively identifying how Global Counsel can support clients and their objectives beyond the successful execution of client requests.
- Presenting information clearly and compellingly in writing and through the visualisation of relevant data, including by drafting slide decks on PowerPoint.
- Supporting the development and implementation of policymaker engagement by Global Counsel and its clients.
- Supporting and leading business development by identifying potential clients, contributing to and leading pitch processes, and proposing and leading business development outreach campaigns.
- Building and maintain a network of contacts among policymakers and wider stakeholders at senior levels

**Skills and profile**:

- Masters degree level qualification in economics, political science, international political economy or a related discipline, is desired but not essential;
- Excellent written English and comfort in using core software for data interpretation and visualisation, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint;
- 4-6 years’ experience providing advice on trade and industrial policy issues in government, EU institutions, think tanks, consultancies and/or companies’ in-house policy team;
- Demonstrated experience in trade and industrial policy and EU trade policymaking process. Additional experience and/or interest in UK, WTO, China, US and other third-market policymaking is a plus;
- Robust understanding of trade-related legislation and regimes alongside the above-mentioned policy areas. Additional areas of expertise and/or interest in export controls and foreign investment screening mechanisms are a plus;
- Other European languages are desirable but not essential;
- A motivated self-starter who works well independently and as part of a team.
- This is a full-time role based in Brussels with the possibility for work travel._
