**Legal Director - R&D Procurement EMEA**:
The Johnson & Johnson Global Law Department is recruiting for a Legal Director, R&D Procurement EMEA to join our team and to provide legal support to various groups in Johnson & Johnson’s Procurement and Global Services organizations. The position will be located at one of the Janssen R&D sites in Europe and will include up to 10% regional/international travel. Relocation expenses will not be paid/reimbursed.
**Job Description**:
The Legal Director R&D Procurement EMEA will provide legal support for R&D contracting organizations for Janssen entities located in EMEA. Responsibilities will include providing strategic guidance and support to the organizations and contract drafting, negotiation and training to contracting groups.
This position will report to an Assistant General Counsel, supporting Janssen R&D. The Legal Director will be responsible for leading the team supporting R&D contracting in EMEA, which currently includes two direct reports and may include outside legal counsel.
This position will support Procurement initiatives (across multiple Procurement categories) in the EMEA region and will collaborate with Global Law Department colleagues and business partners across regions. Our team’s mission is to deliver strategic counsel and transactional excellence to our business partners, while mitigating risk, maintaining highly effective partnerships and upholding consistency in legal practices and standards.
**Major Duties and Responsibilities**:
The Legal Director will:
- provide strategic legal counsel to the Procurement and Global Services functions, including senior management;
- handle, draft and negotiate complex agreements, across a wide range of R&D procurement categories (product development and clinical supply agreements, laboratory services agreements, engineering and device development agreements, flexible resource agreements, data sharing agreements, clinical and on-clinical research related vendor agreements, and clinical logistics services), and coordinate similar activities across and outside the EMEA region in collaboration with other Johnson & Johnson attorneys;
- provide legal advice on contracts, help ensure that agreements meet business needs, align with Johnson & Johnson policies and procedures, and that legal risks have been properly identified, assessed and mitigated;
- advise and support the Procurement function, and relevant business collaborators, in the assessment and management of potential agreement disputes;
- coordinate with other functions, including Johnson & Johnson’s Global Services and Procurement organizations, as necessary, to deliver and improve the contracting process, which may include developing and delivering training, harmonizing and rationalizing templates, building guidance or playbooks, identifying and adopting standard methodologies and supporting process improvement initiatives in a continued effort to streamline contract related processes to improve timeliness and accuracy;
- lead, develop and coach the legal R&D contracting team in EMEA, empowering them to act confidently and autonomously;
- develop a culture of connectivity and collaboration within the team, the Global Law Department Pharmaceuticals R&D team and the broader Global Law Department and Enterprise;
- lead and supervise external legal counsel and external counsel budgets.

This position requires at least 10 years of significant experience managing, drafting and negotiating complex projects and agreements, preferably in-house at a multi-national corporation, or at a large or mid-sized law firm, with demonstrated excellent results, and preferably in the pharmaceutical industry. This should include experience negotiating agreements in one or more of the following business areas: product development and supply, laboratory research, clinical research, laboratory testing, clinical logistics or biology services.
- A law degree is required.
- Current licence / certification to practise as a lawyer in an appropriate jurisdiction.
- Deep understanding of the legal ramifications and needs of the business environment in one or more of the above-mentioned areas.
- Strong team working skills - relationship management, interpersonal, communication (both written and spoken), negotiation and organizational skills.
- Sound judgment and strong drafting, negotiation, analytical skills, problem solving, and legal risk assessment and business consultative skills.
- Positive attitude, high emotional intelligence and the ability to work independently and effectively in a highly matrixed and sometimes ambiguous corporate environment.
- Strong ability to design, develop and lead strategic and process improvement initiatives.
- Fluency in English with the capability of drafting contract terms and conditions in English.
- Comfort reporting to and working with colleagues from the US and other regions.
