The International School of Brussels (ISB) is a dynamic, inclusive learning organization committed to developing independent learners and international citizens. The Early Childhood Center corresponds to pre-school classes to Grade 2 (Ages 3 to 8). ECC is characterized as having a small school community feel, that is supportive of the needs of young children, whilst being able to offer them all of the benefits of being part of the wider ISB Campus and community.
The ISB learning experience in the Early Childhood Centre is focused upon providing a safe, nurturing environment in which children can explore the early stages of the various literacies (reading, writing, mathematical) that will be key to all future learning. In addition, the ECC programme supports young learners in developing a range of inquiry and social skills, as well as their capacity to learn collaboratively.
Introduction to the position
We are looking for flexible young graduates who are passionate about teaching and learning, who are able to be actively involved in a dynamic team, who can work collaboratively and build on the leadership of their supervising teacher, who can show initiative, bring new ideas, and most of all contribute to student learning.
Key accountabilities
ECC classroom interns work alongside a classroom teacher and are fully immersed in all aspects of the day. The following are some of the expectations of the role.
- Conduct small group, one-to-one, and/or whole class instruction when necessary.
- Facilitate high quality small group work or work with individuals (in any and/or all content areas) that will meet the needs of both academically challenged and able students. This includes and is not limited to, developing learning profiles, instruction, assessment, book selection, collecting manipulatives and materials, planning activities, monitoring student progress and reporting back to the classroom teachers.
- Work together with the supervising teacher to help maintain a positive classroom environment (For example construct new bulletin boards, display children’s work that demonstrates their learning, sort manipulative equipment and reading materials, assist with the preparation, set-up & cleanup of educational experiences etc.).
- Help with completing day-to-day preparations (copying papers, gathering materials for all content areas, tidying up the classroom, etc.).
- Accompany students and participate in specials (Art, P.E., Music, Library, French/ESL, theatre, assembly) and ISB+ programs organised by the ECC.
- Participate in meetings with the supervising teacher and contribute to planning and discussion/reflection related to professional role and responsibilities.
- Supervise morning recess duties (before school) which start at 8:15 a.m. (promptly).
- Run one after school club activity held one day a week.
- On Wednesday afternoons interns may be assigned a different role in their own or a different grade level classroom.
- Various duties as assigned by the Heads such as supervisory roles as needed.
- Schedule a monthly meeting with the classroom teacher to discuss successes, challenges and next steps. Fill out the reflection form (CAL) and submit it to the intern coordinator monthly.
Professional Development expectations:
- Attend professional training/workshops throughout the year (after school if needed) and all ECC Faculty meetings/ Wednesday lunchtime meetings.
- Set a professional goal or series of goals. Keep a professional growth record where you gather evidence of growth against goals.

- Maintain a professional attitude and honour school philosophy, rules and regulations when working with the students.
- Exhibit patience, sensitivity, understanding and flexibility when working with all individuals.
- Maintain awareness and concern for meeting the individual needs of each and every child.
- Take initiative to assess classroom situations and support teachers and students as needed.
- Collaborate with grade level colleagues.
- Collaborate with other interns within ISB so that a support network is formed that promotes professional learning, collegiality and teamwork.
- Ask questions and use other teachers as a resource.
- Use opportunities provided to experience teaching at different grade levels for or with different teachers to enhance their professional portfolio.
