The Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics is responsible for high-quality education and research from laboratory to clinic and back, in order to provide innovative and patient-oriented care over the entire life course. This vacancy will strengthen the medical research and education at the department.

**YOUR TASKS**
- At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation in the field of pediatric obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated liver steatosis.
- You will conduct this research within the research group of the Department of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology (Prof. Ruth De Bruyne) and the Hepatology Research Unit (Dr. Sander Lefere, Prof. Anja Geerts) within the Department of Internal Medicine and Pediatrics.
- You will unravel the inter-organ connection between the liver and muscle, as well as the effect of physical activity and myokines on “liver health” in children and adolescents with obesity. On the one hand, as a researcher, you will conduct clinical-translational research in this population. On the other hand, within the Hepatology Research Unit, you will carry out exercise interventions and pharmacological studies using an already developed mouse model for pediatric metabolic dysfunction-associated liver steatosis. Your research activities will take place at The Core (UZ Gent campus) as well as in regional hospitals in East and West Flanders, with which collaboration is established for the clinical study.
- You will collaborate with several researchers within and outside the department, such as the research group of Prof. Dr. J. Boone from the Department of Movement and Sports Sciences.
- You will contribute to teaching activities at the bachelor’s or master’s level, primarily within the department.
- You will supervise master’s students in the context of exercises, internships, and master’s theses.

**WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR**
- You hold a degree of Master in Medicine, Biomedical Sciences, Biochemistry & Biotechnology, Veterinary Medicine, Bioscience Engineering or Pharmaceutical Sciences (or similar). The degree requirement needs to be fulfilled at the start of your appointment.
- For diplomas awarded outside the European Union, a certificate of equivalence (NARIC) must be submitted.
- You achieved very good academic results during your master's studies.
- You have a passion for scientific research.
- You possess an independent, problem-solving, organized, and result-oriented mindset.
- You hold a FELASA-C certificate for animal research and can work independently with laboratory animals, or you are willing to obtain it within six months.
- You have a strong interest in student supervision in academic and/or advanced academic education.
- You possess teaching and communication skills.
- You communicate fluently in both Dutch and English.
- You work well both in a team and independently.
- You preferably hold a valid type B driver’s license.

- We offer you a two-year appointment, which may be renewed twice for two years, on condition that the previous term was given a positive evaluation. Attention: If you have been previously appointed as a junior assistant or doctoral fellow at a university within the Flemish Community, this appointment will be deducted from the maximum term of appointment, which is six years at the most according to the Codex of Higher Education
