**ABOUT THE THEORY AND HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBAN PLANNING RESEARCH GROUP**

The areas of interest and expertise of the professors and researchers working in this domain of Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning are:

- eighteenth-century European architecture, architectural publications and historiography, in relation to culture, sciences and politics; aspects of twentieth-century architecture;
- materialist approaches to architectural history and theory, especially environmental effects of building material production, history of reuse of building components, building material ecologies and landscapes of the Anthropocene;
- colonial and postcolonial architectural and urban history in (Central) Africa;
- global architectural history;
- construction history with a strong focus on non-European areas;
- research at the intersection of urban change dynamics (urbanization) and practices that seek to transform these dynamics (urbanism);
- study of the role of urbanism and design politics in defining and responding to urban questions, focusing on non-speculation in housing, soil and land politics in food supply, and areas of interest in the search for a non-extractive urbanism;
- architecture of heritage (museums and heritage sites, discourses, practices) since the 19th century and extended architectural practices in contemporary architectural culture (policies, institutions, exhibitions, publications, criticism, etc.);
- practice of the architect in early modern Europe (1400-1700), including architectural training, workshop organization, reliance on drawing and the production and use of models;
- theory of architectural design and practice, media and mediality, building types, processes of institutionalization, architectural policy and contemporary architectural culture;
- practices and exchanges at the intersection of architecture and art in the second half of the 20th and beginning of the 21st century;
- the (art & architecture) exhibition as a form of knowledge and presentation, with attention to the role of exhibition architecture and spatial practices within curatorship;
- institutional and architectural politics of contemporary art institutions and museums.

**YOUR TASKS**
- At least 50% of your assignment will be spent on academic research in preparation of a doctoral dissertation.
- You will develop theoretical and/or historical research on the mediality of (contemporary) architecture and urbanism, which may span to consider professional, cultural, civil or governmental practices. More specifically, the PhD research may consider the uses of media (such as film, photography, drawing, collage, prose, or combined media like exhibitions) in the analysis and design of the (built) environment, and in the anticipation and communication of design projects. The research might consider modes of architectural visualization and modelling and how these forms engage with a range of present-day concerns and audiences.
The period of study is preferably contemporary: post-WW II to the present day.
- What interactions exist between communication and arenas of architectural media (exhibitions, biennials, social media platforms) in which architectural projects have been critically assessed in recent history?
- What is the role of these new arenas in "making things public"?
- What impact has this had on existing design practices, discourse, imagery and image-making, and/or how has this translated into the development of (new) practices and epistemic frameworks?
- How do relationships between artistic (visual art, film, photography, literature, poetry, etc.) and knowledge-theoretical (critical geography, counter-mapping, political ecology, etc.) fields of practice evolve?
- Your research will take place in the context of the Theory and History of Architecture and Urban Planning research group (see above).
