**ASSIGNMENT**

Marine macroalgae (seaweeds) are of both ecological and economic significance. Ecologically, seaweeds serve as keystone species, creating habitat and serving as food for countless marine organisms. Moreover, they absorb carbon dioxide and produce oxygen through photosynthesis, significantly contributing to global carbon sequestration and oxygen production. In addition to their ecological importance, seaweeds hold economic value, especially in industries ranging from food and agriculture to pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. Furthermore, their rich biochemical composition makes them a valuable resource for producing various commercial products, including fertilizers, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. As society grapples with pressing environmental challenges and seeks sustainable alternatives to traditional industries, seaweed cultivation and usage offer promising opportunities for economic growth while simultaneously promoting environmental stewardship.

However, compared to terrestrial plants, genetic resources and genomic tool kits to study the biology of seaweeds and potentially generate new strains with desirable characteristics have hardly been developed. The Department Biology has a long history of studying the diversity, ecology, and physiology of seaweeds. The department is now opening a part-time (0,1FTE) position in the degree of assistant professor in the Department of Biology - Faculty of Sciences, starting from 1 September 2024, to promote research in the field of macroalgae genetics and gene-editing.

**Academic education**

You lecture various course units in the discipline of functional plant biology. You will be responsible for supporting academic teaching in relation to the Master of Sciences in Biology, specifically in the major Functional Biology. Teaching will be assessed on timeliness, suitability to the program and interaction with students.

**Academic research**

You conduct research in the discipline of genetics and gene-editing of macroalgae. You seek additional funding to realize projects and to hire PhD students, and you act as their supervisor.

**Academic services**

You take part in the internal and external service provision of the department of Biology.

**PROFILE**

**Experience**
- You have already conducted eminent academic research in the given discipline, which is clearly reflected in publications in high-quality academic journals and peer-reviewed books;
- You are capable of initiating, supervising and acquiring the necessary funding for academic research;
- You are didactically skilled to teach university students to develop academic competences;
- Recommended are:

- Experience with cultivation and molecular genetic research of seaweed (including genetic transformation and genome editing)
- Your CV is such that you stand a chance of successfully obtaining ERC credits or other national or international funding sources (e.g. FWO, EOS, EU projects, etc.).
- International mobility, among other things thanks to research stays at institutions external to the one where you acquired your highest academic degree;
- Positively evaluated experience in provided or organised academic lecturing;
- Professionalisation of education.
- You must master the language of instruction in which you will teach a course at CEFR- level C1. You can demonstrate this by means of a language certificate or a diploma obtained from an institution in which that language is the language of instruction. In addition, Article II.270, -1 of the Codex of Higher Education requires that: (i) you must master the Dutch language at least at CEFR-level A2 within two years after the start of the appointment. (ii) you must be able to master the Dutch language at least at CEFR-level of B2 within five years after the start of the appointment.
