Azure Platform Engineer

The Azure Platform Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, managing, and optimizing Microsoft Azure platform services to provide a secure, scalable, and resilient cloud foundation for the organisation. The role ensures platform reliability, security, governance, and operational excellence through automation, Infrastructure as Code, and standardized cloud services. Acting as a key liaison between operations, architects, security teams, and application owners, the engineer translates business and technical requirements into enterprise-grade Azure platform capabilities. All Azure resources, configurations, and platform services must be deployed and managed exclusively through Terraform and CI/CD pipelines, ensuring consistency, compliance, and repeatability across all environments.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, operate, and continuously improve the Microsoft Azure platform, ensuring a secure, scalable, and resilient cloud foundation for application and product teams.
  • Deploy, manage, and maintain Azure infrastructure and platform services using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform), ensuring all resources are fully automated, version-controlled, and reproducible.
  • Develop and maintain Azure Landing Zones, governance frameworks, platform standards, and reusable cloud services aligned with enterprise architecture principles.
  • Monitor platform health, performance, availability, security, and cost efficiency while performing troubleshooting, patching, capacity management, and lifecycle management activities.
  • Collaborate with cloud architects, security teams, DevOps teams, and application owners to deliver reliable, secure, and scalable cloud services.
  • Implement and maintain CI/CD pipelines, GitOps practices, automation frameworks, and platform engineering capabilities to improve operational efficiency and consistency.
  • Manage and optimize Azure networking, connectivity, private access patterns, DNS, and hybrid integration services between Azure and enterprise environments.
  • Ensure compliance with security, governance, backup, disaster recovery, regulatory, and operational standards across the Azure platform.
  • Manage Azure identity, authentication, authorization, RBAC, Privileged Identity Management (PIM), Managed Identities, and identity governance controls.
  • Operate and maintain core Azure platform services including networking, storage, compute, container platforms, monitoring, security services, and platform management tooling.
  • Drive continuous improvement through automation, standardization, documentation, self-service capabilities, and platform engineering best practices.
  • Support incidents, problems, changes, service requests, and root cause investigations while maintaining agreed service levels and operational excellence.
  • Provide technical guidance and enablement to engineering teams consuming Azure platform services.
  • Enforce the principle that all Azure deployments, configurations, and modifications are performed exclusively through Terraform and approved CI/CD deployment pipelines, with no manual changes permitted in production environments.
  • Promote cloud security best practices, Zero Trust principles, and operational resilience across the Azure estate.
