Role Description
As a Patent Engineer at AWA, you will support clients and attorneys in protecting technologically advanced innovations through high-quality patent work. In this full-time hybrid role based in the Liege Area, you will draft and prepare patent applications, assist with responses to patent office actions, and help manage patent portfolios. You will analyse inventions, conduct prior art searches, and assess patentability, freedom-to-operate, and technology trends in close collaboration with clients and colleagues. The role involves working with research and development teams to understand technical solutions, translating complex concepts into clear and precise patent documentation. You will also contribute to IP strategy discussions, support due diligence and competitive analysis, and participate in internal knowledge sharing and professional development activities, with flexibility to work partly from home. You will also receive long term training in order to become a qualified patent attorney.
Qualifications
- Experience or familiarity with Research and Development (R&D) environments, and the ability to communicate effectively with engineers, scientists, and product teams.
- Curious and ready to explore unknown technologies.
- Good Analytical Skills for evaluating inventions, assessing prior art, and forming clear, reasoned opinions on patentability and scope.
- Patent drafting and prosecution capabilities, including experience or interest in Patent Preparation and collaboration with patent attorneys.
- Basic understanding of Patent Law and Intellectual Property principles, with the ability to apply IP rules pragmatically to real-world business and technology scenarios.
- Degree in engineering, physics, computer science, or a related technical field.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in French and English; additional Belgian national languages are a plus.
- Detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a client-focused environment.
- Interest in long-term development toward qualification as a patent attorney.
