Job Description
- Support the breeder in developing and operating a mature breeding pipeline
- Generate breeding populations in greenhouses in Belgium using methods that shorten generation cycles where possible
- Plan and execute greenhouse activities for parental line development with limited supervision
- Grow and evaluate plants and seed samples according to agreed procedures
- Set climate parameters, monitor plant growth, perform crossing activities, harvest and process seeds
- Plan and execute leaf or seed sampling for genotyping
- Evaluate plant characteristics and plant diseases
- Assemble data and report results in a timely manner
- Manage seed storage inventory and shipments
- Maintain records using appropriate digital tools and databases
- Troubleshoot and maintain equipment used for seed evaluation and processing
- Collaborate with local teams and other functions on greenhouse, technical and safety activities
Requirements:
- Training in agriculture, biology or equivalent relevant work experience
- Professional experience in cereal breeding and applied plant research
- Knowledge of common agricultural and laboratory procedures
- Experience with greenhouse activities, plant growth protocols and crop protection
- Experience performing crosses, harvesting spikes and processing seeds
- Mechanical aptitude for handling, modifying and adapting relevant equipment
- Ability to design and execute experiments
- Ability to manage multiple tasks independently with occasional supervision
- Strong collaboration skills and ability to work with diverse teams
- Intermediate computer skills with motivation to learn new digital breeding tools
- Ability to analyse, review and summarise data effectively
- Good technical and interpersonal communication skills
- Commitment to maintaining a safe working environment and following safe working practices
