The synthesis of (semi)aromatic polymers derived from renewable resources is currently attracting tremendous interest from both academia and industry, as aromatic compounds are key intermediates in the manufacture of polymers and chemicals, but are still currently fully derived from fossil resources.
VITO is co-initiator of Biorizon, an industry driven Shared Research Center, focusing on technology development for the production of functionalized biobased aromatics for performance materials, chemicals & coatings. As the leading institute, VITO coordinates the development of lignin derived bio-aromatics.
**Our offer**
University affiliation for this PhD will be the FYSC group (Physical Chemistry and Polymer Science) at the VUB, a group with extensive expertise in structure-property relationships of polymeric materials. The VUB promotor for his PhD will be Prof. Niko Van den Brande.
**How to apply?**
- You hold a Master's degree with distinction in polymer chemistry, (bio)materials science, organic chemistry, or chemical engineering.
- You are really hands-on, performing your experiments in the lab according to plan toward the synthesis and characterization of new (acrylic) biopolymers.
- You can work independently, as well as in a team.
- You are motivated, creative, and are interested by both the academic and valorization aspects of material research.
- You are fluent in English, both oral and written.
- You are eager to learn and to disseminate your research results in the form of scientific articles or communications at conferences.
