About the Role

Our client is on a mission to redefine the future of water through climate-resilient infrastructure, circular water systems, and relentless technological innovation. As a Senior Security Architect, you will be at the heart of this transformation, shaping and safeguarding the digital backbone that powers a sustainable tomorrow. This is a freelance opportunity for 12 months, based in Antwerp, Belgium.

You’ll drive the vision and execution of information security, directly impacting the safety, efficiency, and affordability of water for generations to come.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and articulate a visionary roadmap for information security, setting clear priorities and investment decisions.
• Translate security strategy into actionable, hands-on implementations that bring policies to life.
• Design, document, and maintain an integrated security architecture across systems, applications, and cloud environments.
• Define and monitor reference architectures, security standards, guidelines, and policies.
• Make risk-based IT security decisions aligned with business priorities such as availability and continuity.
• Apply modern security principles, including Zero Trust and SASE, supporting IT, OT, and DevOps teams with secure-by-design and secure-by-default approaches.
• Lead identity & access management (IAM) initiatives, designing secure and user-friendly access solutions and optimizing existing models.
• Actively participate in security operations: incident response, vulnerability and patch management, security monitoring, analysis, and threat hunting.
• Develop technical implementations and improvement paths for network security (firewalls, VPN, IDS/IPS, segmentation), IAM/IGA/PAM, endpoint & server security (EDR/XDR), and cloud security (CASB, CSPM, CNAPP).
• Coordinate and monitor audits, security assessments, and security testing.
• Drive the organization’s security maturity, with a focus on cloud and hybrid environments.
• Align security measures with internal teams and external partners, reporting risks and improvement actions to the CISO.

Technical Skills & Experience

• Demonstrable experience as an Enterprise Architect with specialization in security (senior level).
• Deep expertise in network architectures and network security.
• Hands-on experience with Azure and M365 environments.
• Proven experience with datacenter and virtualization platforms (e.g., ESXi, AHV, Proxmox).
• Operational security experience: incident response, vulnerability and patch management, SIEM.
• Architectural conceptual skills and ability to translate vision into practice.
• Experience in SOC or DevSecOps environments (advantageous).
• Familiarity with ESXi, Netapp, Proxmox, Palo Alto, Fortinet, SAP (advantageous).
• Knowledge of Zero Trust and SASE concepts.
• Experience with business solutioning and cost-effective security solutions.
• Certifications such as CISSP, CompTIA Security+, or CCNA (advantageous).
• Knowledge of ISO27001, IEC 62443, and scripting/automation (PowerShell, Python, Ansible, KQL) is a plus.
• Proficiency with MS Office packages.

Language Proficiency

• Fluency in Dutch at European CEFR level C2 (spoken and written) is required.

Other Requirements

• Master’s degree (preferably in IT) or equivalent through relevant experience.
• Minimum 5 years of experience in a security-focused role.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; structured approach to complex security challenges.
• Ability to operate at strategic, tactical, and operational levels, setting the right priorities at each.
• Excellent communication skills, able to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders.
• Proactive, responsible, and resilient under pressure.
• Natural persuasiveness and pragmatic approach to stakeholder management.
• Initiative-driven, able to structure work independently and prioritize in complex environments.
