Senior Backend Engineer

Our Digital Products department is the hub where digital products come to life. In close collaboration with our various media brands (spanning TV, news, kids, and radio channels), we build innovative digital products—from high-traffic websites to social media campaigns and mobile apps.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to join our cross-functional agile teams. You will enter a highly dynamic environment where you will share responsibility for delivering a robust digital offering that reaches a large and diverse audience daily. Drawing on your expertise, you will help build a high-quality digital portfolio within a rapidly evolving media landscape.

You have proven experience in designing, building, and maintaining scalable backend services. With a strong background in Java, you navigate modern cloud and CI/CD environments with ease and actively contribute to building robust APIs, performant data streams, and reliable integrations. You have experience with event-driven architectures and can justify technical choices within a complex digital product ecosystem. Experience with CQRS is a strong plus.

What You Will Be Doing

As a member of a cross-functional agile team dedicated to building a seamless media experience, you will contribute to reliable, scalable, and maintainable backend solutions. Together with your team, you will work end-to-end on digital products—from analysis and design to implementation, monitoring, and production support.

• Design & Build: Design and implement backend components, APIs, and integrations within an event-driven architecture.
• Continuous Improvement: Actively enhance existing backend services with a focus on performance, stability, security, and scalability.
• Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with developers, architects, product owners, and business stakeholders to align technical solutions with product goals.
• Operational Excellence: Detect technical risks, propose improvements, and actively contribute to code quality, observability, operational excellence, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Coach team members and share backend expertise both within and outside the team.

Who You Are

• You translate product needs into clean technical implementations, taking scalability, maintainability, security, and operational reliability into account.
• You write high-quality, well-tested code and take ownership of solutions from initial design through to production.
• You take the lead in technical improvements, guiding the team in engineering best practices, pragmatic documentation, and knowledge sharing.
• You communicate smoothly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, explaining complex technical concepts clearly.
• Experience in a digital product or media environment is preferred.

Technical Requirements

Must Haves:

• Backend Engineering: 8+ years of experience in an agile product environment.
• Java Development: 8+ years of hands-on experience in Java-based applications.
• NodeJS / TypeScript: 5+ years of development experience.
• API Design & Integration Patterns: 5+ years of experience.
• Event-Driven Architectures: 5+ years of experience.
• Consulting Experience: 5+ years of experience in consultancy/client-facing technical roles.
• CI/CD & Monitoring: 3+ years of experience setting up CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and providing operational support for backend services.
• Tooling: 3+ years of experience with the Atlassian Suite (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, etc.).
• Leadership & Coaching: Proven experience leading a development team, coaching developers, and guiding agile practices.
• Education: Degree/certification or equivalent experience in software engineering and environments (Java/J2EE, etc.).

Should Haves / Nice to Haves:

• CQRS Experience: Strong preference for experience with Command Query Responsibility Segregation.
• Hands-on Execution: Ability to seamlessly execute programmatic tasks (coding, testing, and debugging).
• Go: Experience with or interest in Go (Golang) is a plus.
