Job Title: Legal Counsel & Data Protection Officer (DPO)

Mission Description

Join a major player in the European energy sector and contribute to the transformation of the energy landscape. Our client ensures the reliability and sustainability of electricity supply, playing a crucial role in the transition toward a greener, more sustainable future.

As an external consultant, you will work alongside a dedicated legal team of approximately 10 jurists, supporting various departments on complex and high-impact matters.

Service Description

The role combines three complementary legal responsibilities:

1. M&A & Corporate Law

  • Provide strategic and transactional legal support for M&A and corporate files.

  • Coordinate legal due diligence investigations and advise on regulatory aspects.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate NDAs, Share Purchase Agreements, Shareholders' Agreements, and related documents.

  • Coordinate and supervise external lawyers and advisors.

2. Data Protection (ad interim DPO)

  • Act as the interim Data Protection Officer in accordance with the GDPR and applicable national laws.

  • Monitor and advise on compliance with data protection rules, including lawfulness of processing, legal bases, proportionality, and data minimisation.

  • Serve as the point of contact for the Data Protection Authority and data subjects.

  • Raise awareness and train employees on data protection matters.

3. Innovation & Technology (R&D / IT / IP)

  • Provide legal support to the Innovation, R&D, Digital, and Tech departments on innovative projects and collaborations.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate innovation-related contracts, including collaboration agreements, license and usage agreements, proof-of-concept agreements, pilot project contracts, and IT agreements.

  • Ensure proper allocation of intellectual property rights (background/foreground IP) in innovation projects.

  • Work closely with IT and business stakeholders.

General

  • Handle various legal matters and ad hoc issues to ensure the smooth operation of the business.

  • Monitor the latest legislative and regulatory developments in the relevant legal fields.

Candidate Profile

Education & Experience

  • Master’s degree in law.

  • Up to 7 years of professional experience in a company or at the bar, preferably in M&A, IP, privacy/data protection, and contract law.

  • Additional experience such as internships, project follow-up, or a specialisation year is a plus.

  • Strong knowledge of civil law is an advantage.

Technical Skills

  • Proven experience in M&A transactions (due diligence, SPA, SHA).

  • Strong background in data protection / GDPR (DPO experience is a strong plus).

  • Solid understanding of IP law and technology contracts.

  • Experience with dispute resolution is a plus.
     

    Languages

  • Bilingual in Dutch and French.

  • Thorough knowledge of English.

  • Location: Brussels (city centre).

  • Remote work policy: Physical presence required 2 days per week (standard)
