About the Role

Our client is seeking a Senior Azure Databricks Platform Engineer to architect, deploy, and operationalize a secure, scalable Databricks environment that empowers data scientists to collaborate, innovate, and drive AI/ML initiatives. This freelance assignment is based in Aalst, Belgium, for a duration of 4 months. You’ll be at the heart of a mission to enable impactful environmental solutions, ensuring the platform is robust, reproducible, and future-ready.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Designing and deploying a new Azure Databricks environment within a pre-configured Azure subscription
• Translating data science platform needs into a robust, scalable Azure and Databricks setup
• Implementing Infrastructure as Code using Terraform for reproducible deployments
• Provisioning Databricks Workspaces, compute policies, repositories, jobs/workflows, and access models
• Integrating Databricks with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2 and other relevant Azure resources
• Establishing foundational AI/ML workload capabilities
• Implementing logging, monitoring, auditability, and cost management measures
• Delivering comprehensive technical documentation, architecture descriptions, runbooks, and knowledge transfer
• Collaborating in an Agile environment with cross-functional teams

What We’re Looking For

• Proven experience as a Senior Data Engineer
• Expertise in CI/CD for Databricks and Terraform via GitHub or Azure DevOps
• Hands-on experience setting up and configuring Azure Databricks Workspaces
• Demonstrated ability to deploy Azure Databricks platforms using Terraform
• Strong programming skills in Python, Java, or Scala for data stream and ETL development
• Deep understanding of AI/ML and data science platform requirements
• Experience designing and implementing ETL processes
• Solid knowledge of databases and security-by-design principles
• In-depth expertise with Unity Catalog
• Possession of a Databricks certification
• Familiarity with Azure Data Lake Storage Gen2
• Experience with government or public sector projects is a plus
• Ownership mindset, proactive problem-solving, and a drive for impact

• Partial on-site presence in Aalst, Belgium (to be discussed)
• Must use own business license for Office software if required
• VMM provides necessary licenses, software, and network access for the assignment
