The Vesuvius Flow Control division develops leading-edge engineering technologies used in the continuous casting process. Within this division, the Robotics Team focuses on the design and development of advanced mechatronic and automation solutions for continuous casting applications.
About The Role
To support our continued growth, we are looking for an R&D Automation Vision Engineer to join our R&D Mechatronics team in Ghlin, Belgium. Our team designs and develops innovative robotic and automated solutions for the steel industry. In this role, you will be responsible for developing and implementing complete machine vision applications for industrial robotic projects. Your work will include robot guidance, 2D and 3D vision systems, optical setup definition, data processing, and on-site commissioning support. You will work closely with automation, robotics, and mechanical design engineers throughout the entire project lifecycle, from feasibility studies to industrial deployment. Your Responsibilities Develop and implement machine vision algorithms for object detection, localization, inspection, shape matching, and robot guidance Design and develop 2D and 3D vision solutions supporting robotic manipulation and process control Conduct feasibility studies, prototyping activities, and proof-of-concept evaluations for emerging technologies and applications Define and select cameras, optics, lighting systems, and vision sensors according to application requirements and installation constraints Maintain, improve, and standardize vision application documentation to ensure efficiency, reusability, and maintainability Stay up to date with the latest developments in machine vision, AI, 3D imaging, and vision sensors Collaborate with automation engineers, mechanical designers, and software developers to ensure seamless system integration Work with industrial robots (KUKA) and automation systems, including Siemens PLC platforms Act as the technical reference for vision-related topics within multidisciplinary project teams Support installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and optimization of vision-guided robotic systems at customer sites worldwide Requirements Education & Experience Master's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, Automation, or a related field 5 to 10 years of relevant experience in machine vision applied to industrial automation and robotic guidance Proven experience in the design and development of industrial vision systems Technical Skills Experience with machine vision platforms such as Halcon, Aurora Vision Studio, or equivalent Strong programming skills in C#, C++, and/or Python Strong knowledge of: Image acquisition systems Optics and industrial lighting Object detection and tracking Artificial Intelligence and neural networks 3D imaging and point cloud processing Vision-guided robotics Personal Skills Passion for innovation and emerging technologies Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work autonomously as well as within multidisciplinary international teams Proactive mindset with a continuous improvement approach Languages & Mobility Fluent in English French is considered a strong asset Willingness to travel worldwide up to 20% of the time Benefits Joining Vesuvius means becoming part of an international company recognized for its innovation, technical expertise, and commitment to continuous improvement.
