About Mantis Robotics
Mantis Robotics builds systems that work safely alongside people, to make robotic automation accessible to anyone. Great safety starts with great motion. Precise, predictable, and responsive control of our robot system portfolio: right down to how every motor turns.
The role
You'll own the low-level control that makes our robots move: motor control, current and torque loops, and the real-time servo control at the heart of every joint. You'll work where control theory meets power electronics and hard real-time software: tuning the loops that everything else is built on.
What you'll do
• Design, implement, and tune low-level motor control (field-oriented / vector control of BLDC/PMSM motors).
• Develop and optimize current, torque, velocity, and position loops at the drive and joint level.
• Work with motor feedback (encoders, resolvers, Hall sensors) including commutation, calibration, and signal handling.
• Implement high-rate real-time control loops and validate them on real hardware.
• Characterize motors and drivetrains and compensate for friction, cogging, and torque ripple.
• Collaborate with firmware, hardware, and safety teams so drive-level control integrates cleanly (including safe torque off and safety-rated motor functions), and interface with the higher-level motion layer.
• Diagnose and resolve control issues on real robots: vibration, tracking error, torque ripple, latency. What skills are needed?
• Solid grasp of control theory (PID, state-space, feedforward, cascaded loops) applied to motor and servo control.
• Motor control fundamentals: field-oriented control, current/torque loops, commutation, and PWM.
• Motor feedback and sensing: encoders, resolvers, Hall sensors; calibration and signal handling.
• Strong C/C++ and real-time programming; comfort with high-rate control and tight timing constraints.
• Familiarity with servo drives, power-electronics interfaces, and EtherCAT-based drives.
• A hands-on mindset: switching between analysis and coding on real hardware.
• Attention to detail: efficiency & edge cases matter.
• Perseverance and commitment to delivering features on-time, with the required quality. Which experience is needed?
• Degree in Robotics, Control, Mechatronics, EE, or related.
• 3+ years in motor/servo control or motion control (or a strong MSc/PhD).
• Proven experience bringing low-level control from theory to a working, tuned axis or robot.
• Hands-on with field-oriented control, current/torque loops, and motor feedback devices.
• EtherCAT-based drives and real-time control; force/torque control a plus.
• Experience with collaborative/industrial robots. Why join Mantis
• Work on control where safety and performance meet: a genuinely hard, rewarding problem.
• Tight feedback loop between your code and real robots in the lab.
• Contribute to the future of the entire robotics industry.
