As part of our team, you will contribute to the development of next-generation joining technologies. Through collaboration with experts from different disciplines and industry, you will translate research insights into validated, industry-ready solutions to ensure that technological innovations generate tangible impact for industrial partners. Your Role You will join the Circular Joining Technology team in Lommel, a multidisciplinary group of engineers working at the intersection of sustainability, digitalization, and the end-to-end lifecycle of bonded products. The team combines expertise in adhesive joining, design and testing, optimization techniques, AI, and knowledge formalization. You will work on developing and optimizing innovative technologies such as advanced chemical bonding, debonding-on-demand, and digital working instructions for applications in smart manufacturing, construction, and high-tech sectors. Specifically, you will:
• Participate in interdisciplinary research projects with autonomous day-to-day task planning, in collaboration with project managers.
• Perform scientific, market, and patent literature studies to identify gaps and translate them into realistic research plans;
• Design, execute, and analyze laboratory experiments related to joining technologies, adhering to safety requirements while working with chemicals, particles, and solvents;
• Construct industrial scale demonstrators and validation platforms for the developed technologies;
• Collaborate with companies to translate industrial challenges into concrete research plans and solutions;
• Present and communicate research progress, findings and demonstrators to a broad range of stakeholders from industry, academia and the public sector;
• Support digitalization-oriented projects involving programming, modelling, AI algorithms, process optimization and data management;
• Support senior researchers in defining research project proposals and future research roadmaps;
• Contribute to the development and future exploitation of reusable technologies, methods, and demonstrators. PROFILE Hands-on researcher with a creative and pragmatic mindset
• A Master’s degree in engineering, science, or a related field (such as materials, polymers, composites, adhesives, material testing or modelling, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry or physics). A PhD is an asset;
• At least 3 years of relevant experience, gained in industry or through applied research in close collaboration with industry;
• Experience with experimental or laboratory work, preferably complemented by programming, modelling, or data-related work. Skills and experience that are valuable to obtain success
• Knowledge of adhesives, materials or manufacturing processes;
• Ability to drive Industry adoption e.g. by previous industrial experience;
• Expertise in Industry 5.0, smart manufacturing, AI-driven process autonomy, and applications in construction, high-tech, or healthcare sectors;
• Strong analytical thinking and the ability to translate complex challenges into practical solutions;
• A mindset of proactivity, pragmatism, collaboration and continuous improvement.
• The ability to work on multiple projects in parallel and switch efficiently between them. OUR OFFER
