Your priority will be to work with the Head of Corporate (Asia) and broader practice and office leadership to develop a credible, effective and well-integrated expertise function for our Corporate division in Hong Kong and Asia. You will be supported by the APAC Director of Expertise & Legal Learning who facilitates our APAC Expertise Lawyer community, and by our Knowledge and Research & Business Intelligence (R&BI) teams. You will work closely with expertise lawyers in other practice groups. You will also work closely with the Learning & Organizational Development and the Business Development (BD) functions. About Expertise The expertise function drives quality, efficiency and profitability through the development of expertise resources, the capture of practice experience and partner knowledge and through the delivery of quality initiatives and legal learning programs. It also supports the firm to win work through thought leadership and enables Ashurst Perkins Coie to anticipate and react to change as 'one firm' through its coordinated network of expertise partners and expertise lawyers. The expertise function has a hybrid structure, with staff based in practices and centrally. This model recognises that an effective expertise function at a firm of Ashurst Perkins Coie's scale requires expertise partners and expertise lawyers who are embedded in practice groups, close to the work and deeply connected to their teams, together with central leadership, coordination and support, to ensure strategic alignment, quality and consistency across the firm. Reporting to Partner, Head of Corporate (Asia) Role Overview Expertise lawyers enable our partners and lawyers to achieve exceptional levels of productivity, quality and client satisfaction. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team that is at the forefront of legal innovation and excellence. The role sits in the Corporate team. It requires an excellent technical and client-focused lawyer with the motivation and skills to establish, develop and drive the practice's expertise function. This role would suit someone who has experience in Hong Kong corporate work. The role would suit someone with experience working in a knowledge function or who is looking to transition to an expertise lawyer role from a fee earning, in-house or academic position. It is envisaged that you will be the sole expertise lawyer within the Hong Kong office. Although the role sits with and primarily supports the Hong Kong Corporate team, you may need to informally support the Hong Kong office as a whole, particularly in relation to coordinating office-wide training (with support from colleagues managing the learning and development function ), legal and/or business subscriptions and other ad hoc matters. As your priority will be to work with the Head of Corporate (Asia), from time to time, you may need to provide informal support to the global equity capital markets practice and the Asia Corporate team. Responsibilities Strategy and planning Develop and implement an annual expertise plan aligned with the practice's and the firm's strategy, setting priorities for the next financial year and tracking progress on the previous year's targets. Knowledge sharing, tools and technology Champion knowledge sharing within the practice team. Work with our Knowledge team to develop and maintain systems to facilitate knowledge sharing. Collaborate with international expertise colleagues to share resources and best practice. Identify, implement, test and champion tools and technology to support fee earner work. Assess the impact of new technology and AI on the practice. Lead change and adoption initiatives within the practice, particularly around technology. Partner with K&E, Learning & Organizational Development, IT and Digital teams to: devise GenAI use cases, including framing questions and instructions clearly and logically for AI tools; evaluate AI model outputs, identifying bias, and ensuring sensitive legal data is handled appropriately; and develop integrated training and learning strategies around practical use cases of AI tools. Champion a culture of responsible experimentation of AI tools encouraging adoption while reinforcing the importance of verification, confidentiality and professional judgment. Thought leadership, client alerts / training and current awareness Monitor, analyze and summarize legal, regulatory and industry developments for our partners, fee earners and clients. Collaborate with other practices to identify relevant developments and opportunities. Conduct horizon scanning to identify developments, issues and trends to help Ashurst Perkins Coie and our clients stay ahead of emerging legal and regulatory iss Plan, coordinate and assist with thought leadership campaigns. Prepare articles f or the Ashurst Perkins Coie website, LinkedIn, and external publications to inform clients of developments. Assist partners with responses to media queries on regulatory changes and market trends Support client training related activities. Help to devise and deliver high quality profile-raising activities such as boardroom lunches, webinars and external speaking opportunities for partners and senior team members. Driving quality, consistency and risk mitigation Research legal and market developments to create relevant practice guidance for lawyers where external commentary is unavailable or guidance is needed. Draft and maintain standard documents to provide fee earners with the best starting point for their work. Collaborate with practice group partners and fee earners, Risk Advisory, Advance, and expertise lawyers across Ashurst Perkins Coie, to develop and maintain know-how resources. Legal learning and 'on the job' coaching Guide and support induction training for incoming junior lawyers and lateral hires. Mentor junior lawyers to develop high levels of technical excellence and practitioner acumen. Devise, organize and deliver training programs and other learning strategies that align with the team's needs and the practice group expertise plan. Provide introductory and 'hot topic' training for relevant practice groups. Create engaging and relevant training materials that align with the Ashurst Perkins Coie brand. Assess the effectiveness of training programs and tailor them in response to feedback. Foster a culture of continuous learning and knowledge sharing.
