We are looking for an ionics expert with hands-on applied R&D, capable of translating concepts into validated proof-of-concepts ready for uptake in imec’s semiconductor pilot-line environment.
We are looking for a Principal Investigator with deep scientific and hands-on expertise in ionics and solid-state iontronic devices. Relevant fields include electrolyte-gated and ion-insertion devices for electronic and memory applications, neuromorphic architectures for bio-inspired computing, and the modulation of material properties through ionic or valence-state switching. You will help translate emerging concepts into manufacturable device technologies within a semiconductor-relevant environment. The ideal candidate combines an excellent research track record with experience in applied R&D, technology integration, and shaping research directions.
What you will do
The selected candidate will use their skills and experience to drive the ionics expertise domain within the Lab, Exploratory Device and new Materials (LEAN) expertise center in imec, Leuven. Together with the LEAN scientific leadership, you will define technology roadmaps, initiate high-impact research, and accelerate the translation of iontronic concepts into semiconductor-compatible devices.
Your main responsibilities include:
• Supporting the team with scientific, technical and hands-on expertise to progress the research on Electrical-Double-Layer-based concepts, such as on-chip solid-state capacitors and ion-gated transistors, as well as on our R&D involving ion-insertion materials for sensing and electronic components.
• Being the scientific reference point for the Ionics domain, building bridges across groups and departments and connecting expertise areas to enable innovation at their interface, while creating opportunities for collaboration.
• Together with the teams, planning and systematically following up on long-term projects, such as customer projects, funded projects, and internal improvement projects. Balancing the need for short-term results with long-term ambitions.
• Using your applied or industrial background, you support the teams with setting up efficient processes and working protocols, whilst considering future manufacturability.
• Securing public funding, seeking collaboration with top consortia.
• Staying abreast of new developments and technologies in the field of ionics and iontronic devices, and being responsible for distributing the knowledge to the relevant stakeholders and for translating the research needs into roadmaps.
• Setting up and maintaining university collaborations, accommodating internships and PhD students.
• Promoting a culture of publications in high-impact journals, at conferences and technical seminars, and ensuring timely identification and protection of intellectual property. What we do for you
