JOB DESCRIPTION
CONTEXT
- SMARTLINK is Client's connectivity and monitoring platform for compressed air installations.
- We are integrating a new generation of modules — Gen3 platform services, AssetLink and CIAM — across four delivery streams: Core Platform (focused on GEN3), Mobile (iOS/Android/WeChat), Website (Portal / My Service Manager), and CIAM (for authorization).
- Roughly nine test engineers work within these streams today.
- Testing quality and speed are constrained less by effort than by structure.
- There is no governed, reusable test data capability; several features can only be validated against production machines and customer configurations; simulators do not cover the end-to-end cases that matter most (Optimizer integration, SmartBox Pro switching, commissioning flows); and the parallel Gen2/Gen3 landscape, ongoing data migrations and the telemetry model transition multiply the dataset permutations required.
- Test maturity varies considerably between teams.
- Our Test & Release Architect is moving to focus on Governance, Risk & Compliance (ISO 27001 and SOC 2 audits in Q1 2027).
- We are therefore looking for a senior expert to take over cross-team test coordination outright and, over six months, raise the whole group's testing maturity to a level that holds after the assignment ends. WHAT YOU WILL OWN
- You have an explicit mandate from the IoT Manager to drive and execute cross-team testing for the Gen3 integration program, working closely with the Product Owners and Tech Leads of each sub-team. COORDINATION AND STRATEGY
- BUILD A COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY: Foster a team culture where people work together with a shared sense of ownership over quality
- OWN THE TESTING STRATEGY : Define what is tested manually versus automated, and where each test belongs (one-off, in-pipeline, or scheduled and repeatable) and establish a clear process for triaging and resolving what those tests uncover
- PLANNING & COMMUNICATIONS: The integrated test calendar, aligned to Gen3 module releases and integration dependencies, offering a single, credible test readiness view across all four delivery streams
- The E2E scenario catalogue across the 5 sub-teams and integrations, prioritized by business risk with ownership per scenario
- Test entry and exit criteria, definition of ready/done for testing, and a cross-boundary defect triage protocol that quickly separates UI, API, aggregation, telemetry pipeline and dataset causes TEST DATA MANAGEMENT CAPABILITY
- DESIGN AND STAND UP A GOVERNED, REUSABLE, SELF-SERVICE TEST DATA CAPABILITY: dataset catalogue, named owners, versioning, documentation
- COVER THE REAL VARIABILITY: asset type, machine configuration, license status, user role, customer hierarchy, organization access rights
- Build the CIAM role and permission test matrix (customer, distributor, technician, internal users) and make it repeatably testable
- Feed concrete requirements into each sub-team's backlog, and coordinate the sprint allocation with the Product Owners ENVIRONMENTS, DEVICES AND COVERAGE
- Define a proper test strategy for physical devices — sensors, IoT gateways, central controllers, SmartBox Pro and Optimizer hardware — covering device provisioning, commissioning flows, firmware and configuration variants, and how devices are shared, booked and kept in a known state across teams and locations
- ESTABLISH THE DEVICE TEST LAB AND HARDWARE-IN-THE-LOOP APPROACH: what must run on real hardware, what can be simulated, and what can be virtualized
- Map what simulators genuinely cover against what requires physical devices, and produce a costed recommendation
- Drive down the dependency on production data for named features (Machine and Sensor Commissioning, CTA validation, Vibration Analysis, …)
- Turn the Optimizer and commissioning setup from specialist knowledge into runbooks a non-expert can follow MIGRATION AND DOMAIN TRANSITIONS
- A backward-compatibility test approach for each domain, e.g. the Measurement Point → Tag Registry transition
- Dual-source validation patterns for Gen2/Gen3 coexistence and the ongoing migrations
- Ensure timelines are properly documented and communicated with key stakeholders MATURITY AND HANDOVER
- Coach test engineers and tech leads to improve their maturity — hands-on, in their own context
- Guide test engineers in the adoption of relevant genAI tools to improve the quality of their work (we are shifting from Copilot to Claude)
- A metrics pack reported monthly against a baseline you establish in the first month
- A documented handover to named internal owners, with a 30/60/90-day continuation plan PROFILE WE ARE LOOKING FOR ESSENTIAL
- 10+ years in software testing, including at least 4 years coordinating testing across multiple parallel teams in a complex program
- Demonstrable track record of designing and implementing a test data management capability — synthetic data generation, data-as-code seeding, versioned and governed datasets
- Strong hands-on capability. You will write test data generators, build harnesses and automate E2E scenarios yourself before handing them over — this is not a purely advisory role
- PI and integration testing depth; E2E validation spanning backend, web portal and mobile; business flow-focused rather than purely technical
- Experience defining test approaches for connected physical devices — sensors, gateways, controllers — including provisioning, commissioning and firmware/configuration variants
- Test automation and CI/CD in practice (we use e.g. Playwright and BrowserStack, REST-based API testing, Python preferred, Azure DevOps, …)
- Identity and access testing: OAuth2/OIDC, role and permission models, multi-tenant hierarchies and access rights
- Experience validating data across legacy and target platforms during a migration
- Agile multi-team delivery; fluent in Jira, Confluence and a test management tool (e.g. Xray)
- Able to influence Product Owners and Tech Leads who do not report to you, and to work constructively with teams at low testing maturity PREFERRED
- IoT, telemetry, device-to-cloud or industrial connectivity platform experience
- Familiarity with time-series and telemetry data models, device provisioning and commissioning flows
- Experience with hardware-in-the-loop or device-lab testing strategies
- Exposure to a formal audit or compliance context (SOC 2, ISO 27001) — useful given the parallel GRC program
