Mission

Context

Our drones are tested using a Linux test computer thatcommunicates with the drone via a fibre-optic connection. This test computer plays a crucial role in validating the correct operation of the system and is used for both production testing and maintenance testing.

To ensure reliable test results, not only the drone but also the test computer itself must be validated. Faulty internal connections, incorrect configurations or communication issues within the test computer may lead to incorrect conclusions when testing a drone.

As the same test computer is used over a long period, a method is required to regularly verify that all internal hardware and communication connections are still functioning correctly, without requiring a physical drone.

Problem Description

The Linux test computer includes several internal communication connections, including USB, serial, network and other data connections that are normally used to communicate with a drone.

At present, there is no simple way to verify whether these connections are functioning correctly when no drone is connected. As a result, failures, wiring issues or configuration errors may go unnoticed until a vehicle is actually tested.

An automated self-test environment is therefore required to check the correct operation of the internal communication channels, detect errors and provide the user with clear information about the cause and location of a problem.

Objective

The objective of this internship is to develop a self-test tool for the Linux test computer. The tool must be able to run independently of a physical drone and validate the technical operation and reliability of the test system.

The tool must:

Automatically check all relevant internal communication connections, including USB connections, serial ports and network interfaces.Verify that data can be sent and received correctly through these connections.Identify faulty connections, cables or communication channels and indicate the location of the problem.Display clear error messages and suggest possible solutions to the user.Be suitable for use as an acceptance test when assembling a new test computer.Be suitable for use as a periodic health check to monitor the reliability of existing test computers.Be fully executable without a connection to a physical drone.Be accompanied by a user manual, a test procedure and technical documentation so that the tool can be used and maintained easily.

Your Profile

You have basic programming knowledge, preferably in Python and/or Bash. You are also familiar with Linux or Ubuntu and are comfortable using the command line. Knowledge of serial communication and basic networking principles is a significant asset. You work analytically, accurately and independently, and you are interested in hardware, software and test automation.
