Application Development Scientist

We are seeking an Application Development Scientist – Formulation, Extrusion & Performance to join the AMI Application Development team in Ghent South.

The scientist will help develop the next generation of PVB interlayer technologies, supporting both near-term business opportunities and longer-term innovation platforms for automotive and architectural glazing applications.

This role sits at the intersection of materials, processing, and applications. The successful candidate will act as the technical translator between customer requirements, sheet performance, extrusion processing, formulation design, and raw-material characteristics. The ideal candidate combines a strong foundation in polymer science with practical experience in formulation and extrusion technology and is equally comfortable discussing rheology with process engineers, material properties with suppliers, and application requirements with customers.

A key focus is to develop a fundamental, mechanistic understanding of how resin characteristics, additives, and formulation changes influence rheological and visco-elastic behavior during extrusion. This understanding will be used to explain and optimize critical sheet properties such as thickness and gauge uniformity, dimensional stability, shrink behavior, optical quality, and lamination performance, and to connect these properties to acoustic, impact, and other customer-relevant performance requirements.

The role also works in the opposite direction: engaging with customers to identify unmet needs and translating customer and market requirements into application CTQs, sheet specifications, process conditions, formulation targets, and raw-material requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and document fundamental mechanistic understanding of the relationships between material properties, formulation composition, rheology, extrusion behavior, sheet properties, lamination processes, and final application performance.
  • Evaluate the impact of raw-material and formulation changes on rheology, visco-elastic behavior, processability, sheet quality, and customer performance.
  • Translate customer and market requirements into measurable application CTQs and material, formulation, process, and product specifications.
  • Engage directly with customers and partner with Marketing and Sales to understand application and market requirements, identify unmet needs, and translate them into new-product definitions and technology-development programs.
  • Design, execute, and interpret laboratory studies, pilot trials, and manufacturing-scale development programs.
  • Drive technology development from concept generation through laboratory validation, pil
