Job Description

POLITICO is looking for a talented journalist to narrate the politics of rising electricity demand in Europe as part of a global team. Surge is POLITICO's new global newsletter unpacking the political and policy implications of the energy transition and rise in power demand, one of the defining stories of this moment. This daily newsletter speaks to a powerful audience of politicians, industry decision-makers and advocacy groups across Europe and North America who need to understand the energy and climate dynamics of the rising demand for energy. Whether it's data centers straining grids in Virginia, renewable energy's market resilience in the United States, France's potential electricity advantage on AI or climate policy tensions in New York, the same underlying force
- the scramble to generate and pay for enough power
- is reshaping politics, markets and policy on both sides of the Atlantic. Surge covers that story through one unified lens. We're looking for a collaborative journalist with experience in energy and climate policy to lead contributions and ideas from Europe, working with colleagues around the world to strengthen this area of coverage for POLITICO.

What you'll do

Report, write or edit as part of a global team of energy and climate journalists. Contribute original ideas and reporting to Surge on a daily basis. Work closely with colleagues in Brussels, London, Paris and Berlin, to ensure Surge reflects the depth of our energy and climate reporting across Europe, and partner with the lead author and editors. Produce outstanding journalism across a range of energy and climate topics to have impact for POLITICO across newsletters and platforms.

A collaborator who is successful working across teams and time zones. A journalist who is motivated to deliver a stand-out daily newsletter, build new coverage lines and workflows, and work flexibly within a growing newsroom.

What you’ll need

At least five years' newsroom experience. Strong understanding of European energy and climate politics, ideally at both EU and national level. Written fluency in English French and/or German a strong plus.
