About the position
Engineering excellence at AXA Belgium is a transversal team that contributes to the software delivery of the product teams by taking a lead in the technology evolution, standardization of engineering solutions and animation of the technology communities.
As a senior technical engineer - focus API, you watch over the development practice of APIs in Java and Python. You work on solutions that target the areas of improvement. You apply a holistic approach, meaning you get to work on core technical assets, technology roadmaps, upskilling, software delivery automation, tooling, SDLC and reporting. You furthermore align with other technology experts and architecture to work towards the best technological foundation for the IT department.
The team has a lead technical engineer, with whom you will work closely to define the work order and approach.

Core job description

  • Continuous improvement and applying the security and code quality principles
  • Provide support to development teams in the solution design and development of their software assets
  • Act as an ambassador for the engineering excellence team and secure a feedback loop from/to the delivery teams
  • Animate the engineering community for the technologies you are responsible for
  • Facilitate learning opportunities
  • Write documentation on the development practice, tooling support and SDLC management and keep it up to date
  • Work on libraries and transversal assets to speed up and standardize the development practice of delivery teams (functional, secure, automated)

    Technology Evolution
  • Follow up on coding language and frameworks (in this case Java, Python)
  • Select the most appropriate toolset to facilitate code development
  • Keep an eye on deprecated/obsolete practices, integrations and 3rd party libraries
  • Participate in major conferences

Quality of Engineering

  • Improve CI/CD automation best practices
  • Introduction of a gatekeeping process
  • Increase quality through awareness: Evergreen, code coverage
  • Advise teams on their solution design

Standard & Guidelines:

  • Strive for enterprise-grade engineering by defining, documenting and advocating for standards and following best practices and guidelines
  • Provide standards & guidelines on all engineering practices and their SDLC
  • Applying Evergreen strategy
  • Keep the developer communities up to date with the market, and promote good practices
  • Drive IT tooling evolution and process simplification

Skills and Communities

  • Reflection on the workforce evolution to help building the future:
  • Developer's trainings, upskilling, coaching, support
  • Improve onboarding kits for Java & Python development stacks

Cloud

  • Assist in the introduction of cloud deployment patterns

Required technical skills

  • Verifiable expertise in Java and Python
  • Conceptualization of software solutions through design principles and patterns
  • Resourceful attitude with regards to the market evolution of code languages and frameworks
  • Experience with enterprise grade applications, with a focus on REST APIs and continuous integration
  • Being able to deliver structured and consistent documentation
  • Fast and mature development skills

Required communicative skills

  • Fluent (oral & written) in English
  • Dutch and/or French is considered an asset
  • Apply effective and decisive communication
  • Clear and concise presentations

Expected work experience

  • 2 to 5 years in a professional software development environment
